I have found the questions in this book, and the others which accompany it, to be the closest thing to the real exam outside the NCEES practice exam available.

I think it's just a matter of time before these books become the go to study references for the FE electrical exam.

About the Author
David G. Brown holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master's License, 100 Gross Tons, with Commercial Assistance Towing and Auxiliary Sail endorsements. He has served as the captain of a high-speed ferry serving the Lake Erie islands from Port Clinton, Ohio. Brown is an instructor for North Coast Marine Services, a firm specializing in safety risk assessment, crew training and license instruction. He has also been employed as a boatbuilder and repairer, and for 17 years was a television news producer, writing and producing more than 1,500 hours of news/documentary scripts and receiving an Emmy award for his coverage of the Agent Orange story in 1979.

Great book on a time-saving process.

This book fully explains the Baltek method of boat building. The method is a real time saver over standard cold-molded planking methods and it results in a stronger hull. The method allows for construction of all hull shapes using ordinary tools. Check this out if you are considering new methods for boatbuilding.`

Be sure!

I made the mistake of purchasing this book because I was curious about Baltek products and how to use them. I think you can get that kind of information for free elsewhere (on the web or from Baltek).
HOWEVER, if you will be building a boat out of that materal, and you are sure of it, it appeared to be a very thorough explanation of the subject, and is likely a reference such a builder would really need to make the most of this material.

The content had some useful details but was not the a step-by-step manual suggested by the title. Without having read from other sources I could not build a craft from this book. Even so, I'm glad of my purchase.

"As the editors point out, many thousands of journal articles have been written on pain. This book has digested the literature and presented it at a level that can be absorbed in this large and complete book. The first three sections cover the neurobiology, assessment and psychology, and pharmacology and treatment of pain, followed by lengthy sections on clinical states, including somatic, visceral, headache/facial neuropathic, and cancer pain. Chapters are thorough and generally consistent in format. The only shortcoming of this otherwise excellent book is that many chapters could benefit from more extensive illustrations, including photographs and/or schematic drawings. Melzack & Walls Textbook of Pain

This is a very welcome newer comprehensive atlas and textbook regarding the sensory CNS and neural pathways with respect to the pathophysiology. Nociceptive endings, antinociceptive descending neural circuits are described well. Excellent color drawings and photos are provided throughout the book. This is over a 1400 page outstanding reference for pain physicians, sensory neurophysiologists, anesthetists, neurosurgeons, and internal medicine doctors. The psychophysics of the sensory systems are handled in depth. Neurobiology graduate students will also benefit from this book. Imaging, single neuron physiology, and surgical treatments are described. For example, DREZ lesions, thalamotomy, other intracerebral infusion therapies are also included. Callosotomy, split brain, limited psychosurgery are all covered. The various narcotics and their judicious usage in chronic pain are also covered in depth.

The biochemistry and pharmacology of inflammatory mechanisms and appropriate treatments are also covered in-depth. NSAIDs, opioids, psychotropics have separate chapters and are handled with care. Complications of pain management, pitfalls, and other issues are described.

About the Author
Melvin Williams is the Director of Human Performance Laboratory at Old Dominion University, and has more than 30 years of lab research with a focus on the role of nutrition in sports. He has written and edited five books on ergogenic aids and the role of nutrition in sports -- his two latest books are The Ergogenics Edge: Pushing the Limits of Sports Performance (Human Kinetics) and Nutrition for Health, Fitness, and Sports, Sixth Edition (McGraw-Hill). He earned a B.S. from East Stroudsburg State College (1962), a Master of Education degree from Ohio University (1963), and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland (1968), with a doctoral dissertation on the effects of alcohol as a possible means to enhance strength and endurance. He's an accomplished marathon runner, placing first in his age group numerous times in the Marine Corps Marathon, which merited his selection in the Marine Corps Marathon Hall of Fame in 2001.

The best sports / diet reference book!

I used this book for a class but ended up buying it. It is very easy to read and is wonderfully organized. I usually rent my textbooks but I bought this one. I reference it while planning my workouts and diet routine. It references many of the current diet and fitness supplements and techniques and explains how and why they work, or not.

Not for a typical student

This book might serve the purpose of an athlete, but may not be good for a typical student or non-student.
It has cited too many references, as if it is for a student pursuing a research program. An average undergraduate student has no time to scan through piles of references cited in this book.
It has little by way of visual aids.
Its contents do not present a straightforward methodology for an average person to deduce pros and cons of a food menu.
It has some biased opinions. For example, Figure 1.4 does not list Smoking as a possible cause for Lung Cancer.
It does not give any information about the author, apart from the author's being at the Old Dominion University.
The web link [...] stated on the back page of this book is not valid. This becomes a frustrating experience.
The book is in Paperback format, is used mainly by community-college students with limited budgets for books, and is not a monopoly book. Many better and cheaper textbooks on this subject are available from other publishers. Thus, this book's price tag of $95 is super high. Even the 7th edition's price tag of $75 seems to be high.

I have used this textbook since its 1st Edition and it just gets better and better. Covers meat-based diets and plant-based diets, and provides plenty of excellent research studies.

About the Author

Graham MacKay is a consultant colorectal surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary with an interest in minimally invasive surgical techniques. He qualified from Glasgow University where he also undertook a postgraduate MD degree in the field of perioperative care. During his training he carried out an Ethicon laparoscopic fellowship in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery as well as spending time at the Lahey Clinic in Boston and the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio. He has a keen interest in academic surgery and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Glasgow University. He is also the Director of Surgical Education at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Professor Patrick O'Dwyer qualified from the University College Cork, Ireland in 1979. He subsequently worked at Cork University Hospital before travelling to Columbus, Ohio to work as a Clinical Fellow in Ohio State Hospital.
Thereafter he trained in a number of hospitals in Dublin before taking up his current NHS post in Glasgow.
His major interests include laparoscopic and hernia surgery and surgical oncology including colorectal and sarcoma surgery. He also has a major interest in ongoing clinical research.


Mr Richard Molloy qualified from the University College Cork, Ireland in 1986. He commenced his training at Cork University Hospital prior to travelling to Boston to work in surgical research at Harvard University.
He subsequently trained in Glasgow and Edinburgh before travelling again to the United Sates to work as a Clinical Fellow at The Cleveland Clinic before taking up his current NHS post in Glasgow.
His major interests include hernia surgery, laparoscopic surgery and open and laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery.

can't miss with this excellent method

I thought at first this was another read it and forget it language book. Was I ever wrong. I read the book through, and then went back and began implementing Dr. Metivier's methods. And they truly work. As he states, it takes a few hours(1to 5 hours) to organize, but once this is done, it is all up to you, and your imagination. And unlike other self-help language learning methods, your learning does not stop with the purchase of this book, far from it. Dr. Metivier kindly will send newsletters, advice, practically all one would need to help with his methods. This concise little book is worth many times its selling price. Merci beaucoup, Dr. Metivier for a gem.

I gave this book five stars because it provides a way of learning French vocabulary that had never occurred to me before, and that is very effective. When I was a student I learned, as most students do, by memorizing word-lists for vocabulary quizzes. That kind of memorization may help some students a little but not much, and as the years have gone by I've noticed my active French word-inventory shrinking.

I originally picked this book up because I was intrigued by the idea of a "memory palace," something I had never heard of before. I will definitely use it and plan to adapt it to my other languages as well.

The method isn't only effective; it's also very fun, actually, as it encourages the user to explore his own memory of life events and locations, and to tie these powerfully to the target-language vocabulary.

Highly recommended. Wish we had used this method back in 8th grade when I began my French classes.

Very practical approach.

The memory palace method, which is what Anthony presents as a basis for memory work, is probably well known to anyone who has studied the field. Many memory instructors start off by making you practice with meaningless memory chains, trying to convince you that you too, with some training, can become good at using mnemonics.

What sets Anthony's book apart from other memory manuals is his ability to get started right away and focus on memorizing your vocabulary. That's what his book says on the cover and that is exactly what it delivers. No long unnecessary explanations, no drawn-out theories, no pompoms.

I have trouble retaining complex memory structures for long periods of time and I spend a lot of time and resources looking for the most effective memorization methods. I can confidently say that I haven't found a better book to teach me how to absorb new words and keep them active and available for quick recall. Thank you.

Solid Mid-Tier Book (No changes since last edition)

If you are new to the GMAT and looking for a quicker prep plan, Kaplan Premier is a good book to work with - it provides a good intro to the test (explains the mechanics, basic principles, gets you familiar with the test structure, etc), has solid strategies that you can use regardless of your level, and finally, comes with 5 Adaptive tests. Think of it a starter camera/computer/car/etc - you don't want to start with anything expensive before you know what you are looking for. On the flip side, this book will last you for 3-4 weeks and most likely will only boost your score by 50-75 points. If you want a greater increase (and have 3 months to study, skip this book and pick a bigger caliber package from Manhattan GMAT or Veritas Prep that have a comprehensive overview of everything GMAT-related).

~~~ THE GOOD: ~~~
* Quite a few practice questions
* Solid material with proven Math and Verbal strategies as well as formulas/etc background
* 49 pages covering Integrated Reasoning
* 6 Full GMAT Tests (5 are in adaptive CAT format on the online and 1 is in a paper format in the book)
* Online practice with additional exercises and quizzes - 18 online drills
* Much of general info on gmat has been moved into online video format, called Fast Fact Videos; that helps with learning when you have had too much reading for the day
* Great value for the money with 6 Full GMAT tests, practice questions, and many online Quizzes
* Good amount of coverage for the INTEGRATED REASONING.

~~~ THE BAD: ~~~
* Errors - I have spotted a few typos and issues with explanations; I suspect there may be a few more
* Access to the online components expires after 6 months. This is the only reason to buy a new book vs used
* NO CD/DVD - online content only for Tests
* Does not have the depth and width a 700+ score requires
* 1,100 Pages and 6 LBS! - not a travel size book

~~~ OTHER STUDY OPTIONS & BOOKS ~~~
Many applicants, bypass Kaplan Premier completely and head straight for the more specialized books such as the Manhattan GMAT Set of 8 Strategy Guides, Fourth Edition OR Complete GMAT Course Set - 15 Book. These book sets come with 8-15 books that are targeting specific Math and Verbal areas. You have a much better chance getting a 700+ with those book sets (not guaranteed) but they also do require at least 2.5-3 months to cover them. The MGMAT Books come with 6 adaptive online tests. Veritas Prep books come with tests as well BUT only if you purchase from their website (Ugh) Finally, a book you should also now about is the The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 13th Edition (more on that is below)

~~~ SOME OTHER THOUGHTS: ~~~
* What is a good study plan using Kaplan Premier?
My recommendation would be to start with this book, finish it in about a month or so (by this time you will learn all the basics about the test, how it works, what is tested, and general strategies for answering questions). Then, you an figure out what's the best use of your time - you may have reached your target score and can stop or perhaps you are really lacking in Quant or Verbal and need a lot more serious practice.

* Will this book give me 700+ score?
For the majority of applicants, No. It is not deep enough for most people out of college to refresh the math and verbal fundamentals. You will most likely need other books to help you get there.

* How do I get 700 then?
There are several options:
1. Review each section separately using the Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook and Kaplan GMAT Verbal Workbook
2. Thorough/Methodical review of each area - If you have a bit more time, grab the Manhattan GMAT Set of 8 Strategy Guides, Fifth Edition OR Complete GMAT Course Set by Veritas - 15 Book. These books are excellent and are actually used in the classroom setting for their classes, so you are definitely get the top books. If you dont need/want the entire collection, see my review for what stand-alone books to get. This plan is likely to get you a higher score with this section but it will also take up more time (about a month more). Decide on the approach based on your starting position, target score, time you have, and willingness to study math and grammar for months without a break.

* Any other books I need to know about?
YES. There is one - The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 13th Edition. This book is published by the creators of GMAT and contains real GMAT questions. You should also download the Official GMAT Prep software from GMAC's website (it's free).

* What if I have trouble getting through this book? Where can I find help?
There are several books that can help you get up to speed with quant and grammar:
1. For Quantitative section: Manhattan GMAT Foundations of GMAT Math
2. For Verbal Section: Foundations of GMAT Verbal by Manhattan GMAT

Scored 730 composite with perfect AWA/IR scores!

I highly recommend this book to everybody interested in taking the GMAT. It helped me beat my target score without buying crazy expensive study materials. When I decided to start studying for the GMAT, I took a diagnostic CAT from the GMAT website and scored a 580, which is pretty mediocre. I ran to a brick and mortar book store and picked up the 2015 revision of this book (I took the GMAT in 2015, nothing really changed from 14 to 15 to 16) and began to study. On test day, I ended up getting a 730 composite, having used this book and the free Kaplan daily email questions exclusively.

This book does an excellent job of explaining the test, which is pretty unconventional if you're used to traditional college mid-terms and finals. Understanding the question types and getting an idea of the strategies for solving them to save time for the harder questions is crucial to doing well. The example questions and mini-practice sections are explained clearly to grasp the concept right off the bat.

I suggest:
-3 months at 1-2 hours/day with this book. Shorter and you might get burnt out, but much longer than 3 months and you'll start to forget the stuff from the beginning.
-Periodically take the online quizzes for review.
-Alternate studying between verbal and quant chapters to stay fresh.
-Take one of the practice test on day 1, and 1 every ~3 weeks to gauge progress and get used to sitting for a 4 hour exam. There are 6 in this book and several available for free online. The tests in this book seemed to be slightly harder than the actual exam.
-Register for the free Kaplan daily email questions. These are a great way to practice and FREE.
-Keep momentum up when studying, follow the books strategies, and you'll be set.

Great survey

Engel tackles a vast subject. It sprawls across three centuries of turmoil and revolution. Plus it spans a vast geographic area and a multitude of ethnicities and religions.
The care she has taken with this book starts in the very title, "Women in Russia". It does not say "Russian Women", for that can be taken to connote ethnic (Christian) Russian. Whereas she includes in her study Muslim women, Jewish women, the women of the Volga Germans, and Finnish women. Probably out of praticality, she omits discussion of the Russian Far East (Siberia), which has enclaves of Korean, Mongolian, Japanese and Chinese.
The later chapters that deal with Communist rule may owe much of their detail to the fall of Communism, and the subsequent accessibility of many documents. This may have been further eased by these documents undoubtedly being seen as having no military value. Unlike say a history of Soviet rocketry or microbiology.
I found the most interesting sections to be on the Communist period. They did put the first female astronaut (V. Tereshkova) into orbit, and proudly trumpeted this. But, as Engels makes clear, inside the Soviet Union, women were commonly relegated to traditional family rearing roles, not so different from the US at the time.
A very commendable survey by Engel. One that an interested reader might then wish for her to write more detailed analyses of the various aspects she discusses here.

Engel��s history of women in Russia is a fascinating glimpse at an otherwise overlooked part of Russian history. It is a great addition to any personal library.
