This book offers a fascinating perspective on why we do what we do. Instead of presenting a series of questions to test your "personality type," it helps you to examine past actions, successes, and failures, which point to your "central motivational thrust".
For example: someone who is motivated to excel and achieve will enjoy work that provides a series of varied challenges to be overcome. This person needs to see visible progress and completion. This person will be frustrated by repetitive tasks that never seem to be finished. This person will thrive in a career that requires developing a sharpened set of skills, where he can become an expert, and where he can make satisfying achievements.
Following the process that Mattson and Miller lay out, I developed a deeper understanding of what makes me tick, which is invaluable in guiding me toward a career.

The book is great for understanding one's gifts and strengths

The book is great for understanding one's gifts and strengths, and for gaining a solid perspective on spiritual gifts. I appreciate the authors' understanding of the Bible and of human nature. The title makes the book sound to me like a simple self-help book but actually it goes much deeper than that.

An undiscovered gem.

This book was written for a Christian audience, so don't get it if you don't appreciate that perspective, or if you can't work around it.
But regardless of your views on God... Empirically, Ralph Mattson's way of approaching this subject is both effective and unique compared to what I have seen in the rest of the what-color-is-your-parachute genre. How you work, what makes you tick, what motivates you, and how to identify your strengths so that you can pick a career path that will deeply satisfy you... all of this is addressed here, and the information is presented such that anyone can work through it themselves and come up with some great insights that will guide them in career decisions.
I first read Ralph Mattson in the early nineties. I have watched several people's careers blossom over the last two decades because they read this book and put what they learned into practice. I have been able to make educated choices about what will or won't be a good position for me based on what this book taught me. I look back on the last 20 yrs and I am glad I read it back then.
I am also glad it's still available now... I dug it up and ordered a copy to our summer nanny the other day who's about to graduate with multiple majors from her undergrad program, and is smart as a whip, but still has only a vague sense of what she should "do with her life." I am confident when I recommend this to her. If she finds time to read it in the midst of her 18 hr course load this semester, she'll be happy she did.
So - if you are searching for a framework you can use to think about where to invest your energy for the rest of your life (including not just career but volunteer work, causes, hobbies, etc.) then think about getting this book.
