Aside from pages in the wrong place, it's an easy book to understand

This book is easy to understand, however it was unfortunate that the publisher sold copies that had pages missing and pages placed in the wrong chapters, out of order. It must have been a problem with the printing, because more than one person in the college course for which I was using this book had the same problem. We had all bought our books used, so there was no way to get a refund from the publisher. The book, otherwise, was fine, easy to understand, and not a difficult textbook in any way whatsoever. I am not an environmental science major (I am a social work and political science major, and I read this book for my one and only environmental science course), but I had no problem understanding the material in the book. Hopefully in future editions, the publisher will correct their printing problems.

Informative but Dry

This is a very informative book, if a bit dry in style. I first purchased the book because it was so often referenced in Mary Flanagan's Critical Play. It is probably one of the most complete studies of board games ever published.

Murray does it again

This is not so much a history as a very complete catalogue and description of the board games of the world, classified under the five main headings of alinement, war, hunt, race and mancala games. Every variety is listed according to its geographical distribution, its rules and nomenclature are described, and a full bibliography is given. This book replaced as a standard work of reference the older writings of Hyde and Culin. This work is known for Murray's discovery of the gaming boards of the ancient Near East, and Murray's reconstruction of the games played on them, based on the author's wide learning and experience. The section on the involved problem of board games in the classical world owes much to Austin's careful work, but Murray throws further light on some questions, notably on Pollux's comment on the "five-lined game."

The ethnological interest of board games lies first in the evidence they afford for borrowing between peoples, and second in the part they play in the life of the community. On the first question,Murray's detailed work has made many points more certain. The spread of mancala in its different forms, for example, is accurately traced; and new evidence makes very doubtful Tylor's famous conjecture that the Mexican patolli derives from the Indian pachisi.

On the subject of the origins and purpose of games, Murray concludes that most games began simply as pastimes; but he gives clues through his references on pp. 159 and 235 to the much more interesting cases of board games played with more "serious" intention, for divination, to aid the recovery of the sick or to keep the spirits amused at wakes.

With the aid of Murray's work, topics such as these can now be pursued with much greater ease and certainty, and the author is to be complimented on his success in producing, with much care and industry, this very complete and orderly work, which forms a fine supplement to his earlier book on the History of Chess.

About the Author
Phil Berthoud was born in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1966 but has been based in England since the age of 4. Always interested in music, he took up the guitar at the age of 14 and a few years later met Matt Early, a fine fiddle player from Dublin. Phil accompanied Matt on the guitar for some years until, one night in Madrid, after repeated hearings of Tommy Peoples' High Part of the Road, he decided to take up the fiddle himself. Not owning a fiddle at the time was a stumbling block, and he filled in the time by learning the mandolin which was, at least, tuned in the same way as the fiddle. On returning to England, Phil restrung a beaten up Chinese fiddle and proceeded to soak up as much Irish fiddle music as he could. Through the London session circuit and the recordings of great players such as Tommy Peoples, Tommy Potts, Kevin Burke and Paddy Glackin, Phil took naturally to the fiddle. These days, he spends most of his time performing and teaching on the fiddle as well as mandolin and guitar. With his wife Mahrey and John Brewins, he formed Scatter the Mud in Brighton, England and has now settled in Devon where he continues to perform with Mahrey in the duo Isle. Two children, Louis and Rhianna born in 1997 and 1999 are an inspiration to both Phil and Mahrey.

excellent, but not well-known

Here's how much I like this book:

I have a vast collection of mandolin anthologies and methods. Once I reached intermediate level, I had no shortage of books to graduate to. This was the one I picked, even though I have no interest in Irish music.

It's an impressive method. It is both a collection of songs (in standard and with TAB) and etudes designed to acclimatize the student to the Irish style. There's lots of discussion of tricky points, so at no point do you feel the book's ever abandoned you.

The CD has no accompaniment: it's just the guy playing the unadorned melody.

Some drawbacks:

1. The guy invites you to play along with the CD but never says "1 & 2 & . . . " on the recordings, so you're gonna miss the first couple of measures as your hand moves from your mouse to your mandolin.
2. I think it does a crummy job of actually teaching you how to read standard notation: there's an appendix, but a lot of stuff is covered as it comes up in the songs. It's a mess, in other words. You should probably learn how to do that before coming to this book as I imagine that if you were to come to this book looking to learn how to read standard notation, it would be quite frustrating. Thank God I learned that elsewhere.
3. To my amazement the book doesn't seem to be arranged in order of difficulty. There are some comparatively difficult pieces right out of the gate, and a slew of easy ones bringing up the rear. It presents itself as a book that progresses you along, but the songs actually seem to be decreasing in difficulty!
4. Not much variation in the actual songs: after a while they start sounding robotically like one another: just a simple treble line with nary a doublestop in sight, or much real variation. Is this just Irish music?

This is an excellent book and CD! Philip John Berthoud wastes no time gabbing, but goes straight to the stuff! I recommend this item to anyone who wants to increase their mandolin playing abilities.

A More Objective Review

Considering the only other review for this book currently available, I felt compelled to write a review that is actually about the book, not the subject of the book. A Harvard professor deserves at least that. Perry Miller's classic introduction to the New England Puritans remains an essential text for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of a much maligned and often misunderstood religious movement. An understanding of the New England Puritans is absolutely essential to an understanding of American History and American society. Miller does not espouse the doctrines of Puritanism; he provides a concise and helpful historical background and then guides the reader through some representative samples of their writing. This is not a book designed to convert someone to Puritanism. A sidenote: The Puritans referred to in this book have not existed for centuries, so I assure you no reviewer of this book actually left the Puritanism described in this book.

This book offers a fascinating perspective on why we do what we do. Instead of presenting a series of questions to test your "personality type," it helps you to examine past actions, successes, and failures, which point to your "central motivational thrust".
For example: someone who is motivated to excel and achieve will enjoy work that provides a series of varied challenges to be overcome. This person needs to see visible progress and completion. This person will be frustrated by repetitive tasks that never seem to be finished. This person will thrive in a career that requires developing a sharpened set of skills, where he can become an expert, and where he can make satisfying achievements.
Following the process that Mattson and Miller lay out, I developed a deeper understanding of what makes me tick, which is invaluable in guiding me toward a career.

The book is great for understanding one's gifts and strengths

The book is great for understanding one's gifts and strengths, and for gaining a solid perspective on spiritual gifts. I appreciate the authors' understanding of the Bible and of human nature. The title makes the book sound to me like a simple self-help book but actually it goes much deeper than that.

An undiscovered gem.

This book was written for a Christian audience, so don't get it if you don't appreciate that perspective, or if you can't work around it.

But regardless of your views on God... Empirically, Ralph Mattson's way of approaching this subject is both effective and unique compared to what I have seen in the rest of the what-color-is-your-parachute genre. How you work, what makes you tick, what motivates you, and how to identify your strengths so that you can pick a career path that will deeply satisfy you... all of this is addressed here, and the information is presented such that anyone can work through it themselves and come up with some great insights that will guide them in career decisions.

I first read Ralph Mattson in the early nineties. I have watched several people's careers blossom over the last two decades because they read this book and put what they learned into practice. I have been able to make educated choices about what will or won't be a good position for me based on what this book taught me. I look back on the last 20 yrs and I am glad I read it back then.

I am also glad it's still available now... I dug it up and ordered a copy to our summer nanny the other day who's about to graduate with multiple majors from her undergrad program, and is smart as a whip, but still has only a vague sense of what she should "do with her life." I am confident when I recommend this to her. If she finds time to read it in the midst of her 18 hr course load this semester, she'll be happy she did.

So - if you are searching for a framework you can use to think about where to invest your energy for the rest of your life (including not just career but volunteer work, causes, hobbies, etc.) then think about getting this book.
