William Paley (1743–1805) was an English Christian apologist, philosopher, and utilitarian. He is best known for his exposition of the teleological argument for the existence of God in his work Natural Theology, which made use of the watchmaker analogy (also see natural theology).

Systematic Historical Account of the Evidence of Christianity

This is a well argued, well-cited historical account of the evidences of Christianity by a scholar and theologian. It covers several varieties of argument, including philosophical appeals about the uniqueness of Christianity, as well historical arguments presented through the lenses of outsider historians from diverse cultures who wrote independent accounts and testimony about Christ and his followers.
Moreover, the book describes the process by which the books of the New Testament Bible were compiled, revealing shockingly little conflict and very little room for the error and political faction we are so used to hearing. This book is not an easy read, and includes numerous citations and very thorough scholarship. It is neither a persuasively written work nor is it a light read. However, if a person has an open mind and is willing to commit themselves to the work entailed in reading and verifying the text, it provides almost insurmountable evidence for belief in the reality and authenticity of Jesus Christ.

A Thorough Review of the Character and Nature of the Gospel

I believe this to be a great thorough presention as to the validity of the Gospel from a legal, logical mindset. The author sets out and explores various aspects of the evidence for the Gospel of Jesus. This work is one for the believer in Jesus as well as one who rationally wants to search out the claims of the Good News of Jesus. In the first few electronic pages, Paley lays out the course of human history from creation to eternity in a few concise sentences. Well worth your time and effort.

Masterly Account of the Historicity of Christianity!

This is a wonderful read in an old series from a past-master of Christian apologetic and theology. The style is somewhat antiquated but anyone who can get used to David Hume, Adam Smith and Edward Gibbon can soon master this, and greatly profit from it. To me, Paley does a wonderful job of bringing all the evidence of the first century forward to our own day, to show just how the Christian faith of that time sprang into being, spread, and gainsaid all its opponents to become what it is now: the largest and most realistic faith of the world; and one surely destined, as it did then, to overcome the world. How did the Christian faith come into being in a Gentile world and spread so quickly and triumphantly? That is truly the work of the Holy Ghost and Paley brings that out from sources - Christian, Jewish and Heathen - that will convince all but the most stubborn of the historicity of those exceedingly great events.
