Water in its different forms has always been a source of wonder, curiosity and practical concern for humans everywhere. Hydrology: An Introduction presents a coherent introduction to the fundamental principles of hydrology, based on the course that Wilfried Brutsaert has taught at Cornell University for the last thirty years. Hydrologic phenomena are dealt with at spatial and temporal scales at which they occur in nature. The physics and mathematics necessary to describe these phenomena are introduced and developed, and readers will require a working knowledge of calculus and basic fluid mechanics. The book will be invaluable as a textbook for entry-level courses in hydrology directed at advanced seniors and graduate students in physical science and engineering. In addition, the book will be more broadly of interest to professional scientists and engineers in hydrology, environmental science, meteorology, agronomy, geology, climatology, oceanology, glaciology and other earth sciences.

Review
"Wilfried Brutsaert presents the topics of classical hydrology through rigorous formulations of their governing fluid mechanics starting from first principles. Drawing upon his broad personal experience and employing both clear prose and revealing illustrations, he discusses and supports the approximations needed to answer quantitative questions. His fine textbook will become the accepted starting point for learning this branch of geophysics." Peter S. Eagleson, Professor Emeritus, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
'A remarkable new textbook ... insightful chapters that explain the basic principles on which the practice of hydrology as both a profession and a science is founded. ... The language is informal - that of the patient master passing on both knowledge and wisdom to a new generation. ... Those who learn from this book will be rewarded by gaining understanding and competence at the highest level; those who teach from it will be blessed by the steadfast assistance of an impeccable source, wrought from a long and productive experience by one of the great figures in scientific hydrology."Garrison Sposito, Professor of Ecosystem Sciences and Environmental Engineering, University of California at Berkeley
"Brutsaert provides a uniquely logical and comprehensive construction of hydrologic science which taken together provides a new vision of the nature of the discipline ... In this book Brutsaert has provided a ladder for student and teacher to build a solid understanding from principles to practice ... This book provides a remarkable, sorely needed, foundational text upon which the science of hydrology will build in the coming decades."John Selker, Professor of Bioengineering, Oregon State University
"Hydrology: An Introduction is destined to become a classic - and an indispensable resource for students of hydrology. Building from a foundation of fluid mechanics in the environment, Wilfried Brutsaert clearly and eloquently presents the essentials of modern hydrology. This book takes an original, lucid approach to this important subject matter, injecting a much-needed breath of fresh air into the study of fundamental hydrologic phenomena. This is necessary reading, both as a comprehensive and authoritative introduction to hydrology, and also as a brilliant exposition that captures the authoras excitement and appreciation of the subject." Marc Parlange, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne and The Johns Hopkins University
"...an excellent and comprehensive study of a major topic, and a fitting capstone to the author's long career in the field."The Leading Edge, William R. Green
"This book provides a comprehensive introduction to science of hydrology covering water existing in the atmosphere, on land, and in the Earth...The author shows his extensive knowledge in hydrology and provides an excellent book."The Leading Edge, David C. Bartel
"The analytical approaches are very appropriate for an introductory hydrology textbook because it provides better physical insight into the hydrological processes than numerical models of those processes...In summary, Dr. Brutsaert's book is a remarkable textbook for university-level classes on hydrology as well as a valuable reference for soil physicists, hydrologists and hydro-geologists."Bing Si, Soil Science Society of America
"This is a highly recommended textbook, with great potential of being a classic, and indispensable resource for students of hydrology." Pure and Applied geophysics

I'm a hydrology student in a rigorous program, and I used this text for a graduate course. I'm slightly biased, because when I first decided to study hydrology I checked this book out of the library and tried to give it a go, but it was mostly incomprehensible to me because I didn't yet have the math background to understand it. I thought the integral symbol was a fancy S. Now that I've used it in a class, I think it's my favorite textbook, but I'm also probably just kind of stoked that I can now understand every bit of it!
The best thing about it in my opinion is that it includes lots of "optional" sections in a different font, so if you want or need to know more about a specific derivation or relationship, it's laid out very well, but if you aren't interested you can just skip forward to the next main section. I will still refer to Dingman and Freeze & Cherry for some things, but because I've already been over both of those books in other classes, this one felt like a slightly more intense version, with greater detail and better organization than Dingman.

This textbook is a widely recommended hydrology primer for first year grad students or late undergrads and for this role I think it is written well. Students would benefit from taking a rigorous course in fluid mechanics (with solutions to ODEs, PDEs) before this one, though I do not think there are any other prerequisites. My reservations with this book are two-fold:
1. I found the section on atmospheric turbulence to be relatively confusing and poorly written in explaining the physical interpretation of turbulent flux transfers.
2. Many times, the author skips algebra steps which are not intuitive--and I say this as a student with an undergraduate degree in physics--and is overly fond of saying "trivial" and "clearly" and "with a quick transformation" and so on.
I would personally recommend Dingman's physical hydrology book though this one is satisfactory.

Interesting reference. I gave it three stars because it is not easy to read on my Kindle fire.
