Gr 8 Up–This advice book for Muslim teens covers such topics as alcohol, modesty, music, pornography, the Internet, friends, suicide, abuse, and more. The authors adhere to a fairly strict interpretation of the Qu'ran, so there is no reference whatsoever to dating and they advocate as much separation of the genders as possible. There is also no reference to LGBTQ issues, which is in keeping with the conservative tenor of the book. The approach is positive, encouraging young Muslims to be respectful of both themselves and others. The cover and chapter titles would suggest that the language is teen-friendly, but the tone of the text is academic, dealing more with the Qu'ranic justifications for Islamic law than with helpful advice for reconciling these laws with Western culture. This volume will certainly be what some Muslim teens are looking for, but will not appeal to all. The lack of an index also impedes access to information. Dilara, Iman, & Yasmine Hafiz's The American Muslim Teenager's Handbook (Acacia, 2007) covers similar material with a more liberal and teen-friendly approach. About the Author
Habeeb Quadri: Habeeb Quadri is Principal of the MCC Full Time School in Morton Grove, Illinois. He has a Bachelors in Teaching of History and a Masters in School Administration. He is currently taking courses at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education's Principal's Center, where he has accumulated over 150 clock hours of instructions. In addition to teaching Habeeb has delivered hundreds of lectures throughout the United States, Canada, and abroad, on Islam, society, and social problems confronting Muslim youth and the community at large for the last 15 years.

Sa'ad Quadri: Born and raised in the Chicagoland area, Sa'ad spent his entire youth studying in public schools. He completed his high school a year early in order to pursue his studies in Islamic Sciences at the Institute of Islamic Education. Thereafter he attended Northern Illinois University where he majored in English and minored in History. He is currently pursuing his Masters in Education at DePaul University. By profession, Sa'ad is a teacher and dean at the College Preparatory School of America (CPSA), Located in Lombard, Illinois.

Very practical

This is a wonderful book. Each chapter is a separate entity so you may jump around. It is wonderful for high school and college students struggling with keeping their hearts clean. It's great to read on your own or to use for a halaqa. The chapters are short and to the point and very engaging. I love the practical solutions at the end of each chapters. I highly recommend this book.

This is a great book to buy for teens

This is a great book to buy for teens! It addresses many issues that and concerns that are relevant to our society, but from an educated Muslim American perspective. When was the last time someone talked about "taboo" topics such as pornography or depression and other mental illnesses? The book deals with difficult ideas such as the ones mentioned above and also everyday questions and struggles that the average Muslim teen deals with on a daily basis--parents, culture gaps, social media, parties, drugs, etc. The War Within Our Hearts is a fun (and funny at times!) and insightful read written by two people who know what today's teens are going through, since they've already been there and done exactly that!

Every young Muslim should have/read this book

I've used this book as a teacher with middle and high school students at Islamic school. I feel it is an 'essential read' for the young Muslim teen. I think that the writing and issues resonate with the youth and it allows sensitive topics to be discussed in a manner that is approachable and necessary. Some chapters are dated (i.e. the one on social media) but overall the book is still incredibly relevant.

About the Author
A distinguished professor of economics at Pepperdine University's Seaver College, Dr. Robert Sexton is a graduate of California Lutheran College. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Colorado. Dr. Sexton writes frequently for economic and business journals and is the author of nine books on economics, including his newly released ESSENTIALS OF ECONOMICS and SURVEY OF ECON published by Cengage Learning. His research spans American economic history, economic policy analysis, statutes and enforcement costs, public choice, regional economics, migration, and economic education. Dr. Sexton has been a visiting professor at UCLA and was Pepperdine's 1991 Professor of the Year. His professional achievements have been recognized with the Howard A. White Memorial Teaching Award, the Luckman Distinguished Teaching Fellowship, and multiple Merit Acceleration Awards for excellence in teaching and research.

Tom Wolfe began The Right Stuff at a time when it was unfashionable to contemplate American heroism. Nixon had left the White House in disgrace, the nation was reeling from the catastrophe of Vietnam, and in 1979--the year the book appeared--Americans were being held hostage by Iranian militants. Yet it was exactly the anachronistic courage of his subjects that captivated Wolfe. In his foreword, he notes that as late as 1970, almost one in four career Navy pilots died in accidents. "The Right Stuff," he explains, "became a story of why men were willing--willing?--delighted!--to take on such odds in this, an era literary people had long since characterized as the age of the anti-hero."

Wolfe's roots in New Journalism were intertwined with the nonfiction novel that Truman Capote had pioneered with In Cold Blood. As Capote did, Wolfe tells his story from a limited omniscient perspective, dropping into the lives of his "characters" as each in turn becomes a major player in the space program. After an opening chapter on the terror of being a test pilot's wife, the story cuts back to the late 1940s, when Americans were first attempting to break the sound barrier. Test pilots, we discover, are people who live fast lives with dangerous machines, not all of them airborne. Chuck Yeager was certainly among the fastest, and his determination to push through Mach 1--a feat that some had predicted would cause the destruction of any aircraft--makes him the book's guiding spirit.

Yet soon the focus shifts to the seven initial astronauts. Wolfe traces Alan Shepard's suborbital flight and Gus Grissom's embarrassing panic on the high seas (making the controversial claim that Grissom flooded his Liberty capsule by blowing the escape hatch too soon). The author also produces an admiring portrait of John Glenn's apple-pie heroism and selfless dedication. By the time Wolfe concludes with a return to Yeager and his late-career exploits, the narrative's epic proportions and literary merits are secure. Ignore The First Review

First, ignore the first rating in the Amazon Kindle review. While the Kindle version may well have had problems when first published on Kindle, they have been corrected. That review kept me from reading the Kindle edition of this book for a couple of years. Finally, I decided to try it, and found no mistakes. So, buy it and read it. You will be very happy that you did! I first read this book 30+ years ago and loved it then. Recently, I read The Astronauts Wives Club, another excellent book. This book was the first behind the scenes book to really get the feeling of the brave men (no women astronauts in the Mercury Program), and the test pilots who flew the supersonic jets before them. Prior to this, we basically got the sanitized "official" stories of a group of Boy Scouts. I've read that the Astronauts loved Tom Wolfe's book, but hated the movie. Well, the book is great. I'd also read the Astronauts Wives Club to see the entire story from the wives' point of view.

The Right Name for The Right Story

Just one of my favorite books, went back for a second read. I was a kid at the time of all this and remember how everything would stop for a launch and how intense the competition for space had become. These men were something special and Chuck Yeager is still with us at 94, his story alone is worth it. No phony John Glen an amazing life, he was who you saw him to be. Don't know if we'll ever see another group like them. Probably Tom Wolfe's finest moment as a writer as gifted as he is. Read it and you'll be glad you did.

The Right Stuff has the right stuff, mostly.

The Right Stuff is the story of 7 men chosen for the Mercury space program and also about the life of Chuck Yeager, a very talented test pilot. Most of the story takes place from the late 50's when the U.S. was in a race with Russia to reach outer space. There was a lot of pressure on the U.S. because Russia had already sent out the first manned space flight. Personally I liked the story a lot, it was very interesting, but I feel like the story spent a lot of time around things that were not important to the progression of the story. Examples of this is when they are all sitting around at their hangout, not really doing anything. The characters were very interesting though, at first they were kind of low down and rowdy, but as the story progresses they end up much more mature and helpful to each other. I learned a lot from this book, such as: Who broke the sound barrier first, who the first to go into space were, and how they all got there. I would recommend this book to those who are looking for an interesting story about the advancement of our current technology.

About the Author

Glenn Hubbard, policymaker, professor, and researcher. R. Glenn Hubbard is the dean and Russell L. Carson Professor of Finance and Economics in the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University and professor of economics in Columbia’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He is also a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a director of Automatic Data Processing, Black Rock Closed-End Funds, and MetLife. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1983. From 2001 to 2003, he served as chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers and chairman of the OECD Economic Policy Committee, and from 1991 to 1993, he was deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department. He currently serves as co-chair of the nonpartisan Committee on Capital Markets Regulation. Hubbard’s fields of specialization are public economics, financial markets and institutions, corporate finance, macroeconomics, industrial organization, and public policy. He is the author of more than 100 articles in leading journals, including American Economic Review, Brookings Papers on Economic Activity, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Public Economics, Quarterly Journal of Economics, RAND Journal of Economics, and Review of Economics and Statistics. His research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Bureau of Economic Research, and numerous private foundations.

Tony O’Brien, award-winning professor and researcher. Anthony Patrick O’Brien is a professor of economics at Lehigh University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1987. He has taught principles of economics for more than 20 years, in both large sections and small honors classes. He received the Lehigh University Award for Distinguished Teaching. He was formerly the director of the Diamond Center for Economic Education and was named a Dana Foundation Faculty Fellow and Lehigh Class of 1961 Professor of Economics. He has been a visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University. O’Brien’s research has dealt with issues such as the evolution of the U.S. automobile industry, the sources of U.S. economic competitiveness, the development of U.S. trade policy, the causes of the Great Depression, and the causes of black—white income differences. His research has been published in leading journals, including American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Industrial Relations, Journal of Economic History, and Explorations in Economic History. His research has been supported by grants from government agencies and private foundations.

Great book to get started in the never ending study of Economics. I take good care of all of my books and this stains (from dirt/dust) easily, so that would be my only complaint. Other than that it is an excellent book.
