About the Author
Daniel J. Giaccio, MD is the Program Director of Residency and the Medicine Clerkship Director at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Carla McWilliams, MD, attended medical school at Medical University of the Americas in Nevis, and graduated in 2006. She has worked at Kaplan Medical in the Curriculum Department as an Associate Director of Curriculum for the past year and a half, running various projects with a leading role in the Step 2 CK revision in 2007. During this time she was a contributing author to the Pediatric Step Two Lecture Notes and a contributing editor in both the Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Internal Medicine Step 2 CK Lecture Notes. She is currently an Internal Medicine Resident at Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, an affiliate of SUNY Downstate Medical Center. She took the USMLE Step Three Exam in April 2008 and scored extremely high.

White Coat Pocket Guide (Giaccio, McWilliams) vs. Master the Boards (Fischer, Reichert)

I'm sure many of you are wondering which book to choose: White Coat Pocket Guide or Master the Boards. Both are very good books and make great reviews for both Step 3 as well as Step 2. Nevertheless, White Coat Pocket Guide wins! The helpful algorithms and stronger focus on mechanism of action makes this book amazing. This book is also great for Step 2 because it incorporates pathophysiology, diagnosis, and next step in management, whereas Master the Boards only incorporates diagnosis and next step in management. Master the boards is also lacking strength in such things as arrhythmias and hematology/oncology, whereas this book pulls through strongly in both! White Coat Pocket Guide is overall very helpful and I would recommend it to anyone taking Step 2 as well as Step 3. In my opinion, I would choose White Coat Pocket Guide over Master the Boards.

I love this book and actually kept reading (to learn and not just to memorize) out of interest. This was golden for Step 2 and I will definitely re-read it for Step 3. LOADS better than First Aid...I cannot stress that enough!

Very concise and useful for quick review or quick reference

I bought this book recently as I'm going to prepare for step 3. I found this book is full of clear, concise, valuable and latest facts in 439 pages. Many thanks to authors and Kaplan to make such a useful book available. The size of printed words is comfortable to read; not too small like other pocket books. You can also have a few spaces at some pages to write down additional facts if you want to. This pocket guide will be also useful during on call and on duty for quick reference.

Good Projects, Poor Proof Reading for dimensional errors in the text and drawings

I am rating this as a 3 star in hopes that people will read this review before trying to make any of the projects. Storey, the publisher, does a very poor job of editing their books. I have contacted them more than once to ask who does their editing, but just get the normal BS answer about doing their best. Many of the projects in the book cannot be built using the dimensions given in the project write ups. For example there is a full scale drawing for drive gears for a grape crusher on page 26, if you use the pattern the outer diameter of the drive gears are approximately 2 1/8 inches in diameter, the drive shafts for the two rollers driven by these gears are 2 1/4 inches on center, the gears, if built by this illustration will never mesh to drive the two rollers. The hopper (fig 2.4) of the crusher shows 1 foot wide pieces for the hopper bottom, this will make the crusher wider than the destemmer it is suppose to fit into, plus will leave a gap of 3/4 inches on each end of the crusher rollers, dimensions for the bottom based on the rest of the write up should be 10 1/2 inches. These measurement errors continue through out the book. I sent a 2 page list of corrections for chapter 8 on the wine cellar to Storey and have not had the pleasure of their reply as of yet. I like the projects in the book and find them very functional. The utility of the projects are marred by the errors in the drawings and dimensions, will make you have to test fit every piece as you build to ensure proper construction. Since I am not being paid to be a proof reader, I doubt that I will send any more corrections to Storey. I have previously suggested some correction of perceived errors in the Storey book on building a wine cellar, thay said I would be contacted by the author, etc, etc, but that never has happened and it has been over a years since I sent in the suggestions.

Best of it's kind, but only because it's the only one. :/

Really has far less projects than one would want. The de-stemmer and crusher are good, but the parts to build the press cost more than just buying a press. And things like a bottle rack and lab stand, or a punch down tool are so simple as to be embarrassing if you couldn't figure it out for yourself. And "things laying around your house" include items like PET food grade plastic and a vacuum pump. All in all, I'd say if you have the carpentry skills to translate his plans into reality, you have the carpentry skills to build these items yourself. There are some good tips in here, but as far as solid, money saving plans? Save your money.

This book will help educate the beginning (or mid-level) winemaker by guiding the building of good quality equipment and providing some rationale for it as well. The tools you use partly define how you make wine and can get in the way. This writer has been there, and will improve your wine making (and mine) .

Very good job, well printed and already thumb tagged and dirty in my shop. That should say it all.

This knowledge and related inventions for transporting plants made it possible for the British to grow rubber in SE Asia, tea in Ceylon, coffee in Latin America, sugar in Brazil, etc. This movement of plants around the world were further aided by the valuable discovery of quinine for curing fevers and malaria which meant that the cinchona tree from Peru and Bolivia facilitated the penetration of colonial empire further into the African and Asian continents. This book is carefully researched and beautifully narrated.

An excellent, eye-opening history

I stumbled across this book while doing research for a master's thesis that dealt with, of all things, the history of paleontology and the Peking man digs in China. I found it eye-opening and fascinating. Through showing the history of the British Royal Botanical Gardens, the author manages to teach a great deal about the rise of Europe and the West, Colonialism, science, agriculture and economic production throughout the British empire, and the world at large, up to modern times. Of special interest to me was the intertwining of science and economic exploitation in colonialized nations of the time. I consider this book remarkable in that it taught me more than if I had read five similar books.

A book as well constructed as the stunning houses it describes

What a beautiful and informative book! It's a delight to dip in and out of, but reading from cover to cover gives real insight into both the traditions of Japanese architecture and the principles of eco living. The floor plans and cross-sections for each of the crisply described houses allow the reader to see the exquisitely photographed rooms and features as parts of a whole. The end-of-chapter pages on key terms such as engawa and passive qualities then explain the ideas that underpin the projects. Four chapters on exemplary Japanese houses are given relevance to Western readers by the closing chapter which shows their influence on work in Toronto, Norway, Scotland and Prague.
