Marie Pasinski, M.D., is a staff neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and faculty member at Harvard Medical School, and one of the leading experts in the field of Neurology. Dr. Pasinski graduated Harvard Medical School and completed her residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Since 1991, she has been the consulting neurologist for the Massachusetts General Health Care Centers, where she cares for patients with a broad range of neurological symptoms and disorders.

A new way to view what is beautiful, that it's not just physical.

We've heard about Suduko and crossword puzzles and how they improve memory and brain function but this is a very well written and researched book about many more varied ways that we can maximize and improve our brains at any age. It sounds like it's for women but it applies and is just as pertinent to men so I would encourage men, husbands, male partners to read it too. I particularly like the refreshing concept that beauty is not just physical and also about maximizing intelligence and how that can increase your self esteem and the way you are perceived by others. Beauty is more than skin deep! Being a health care professional I was skeptical about whether it would teach me anything new but I was pleasantly surprised! More than anything, the author is extremely positive and encouraging so you enjoy reading the book and want to keep reading once you've started. Lastly, you can go back to it again and again to enhance your progress. My compliments to the author for an excellent and truly inspiring and instructional first book.

Excellent read for all women

This is an amazing book explaining that it is never to late to wake up our brains and and stay young. Many great ideas as to how to keep a sharp edge on learning and keeping our brains as "tuned" as we can keep our bodies. Very positive and uplifting, a "must" read for all ages
Hopefully this will not be her last book. She makes you want to read more and learn what an amazing thing our brain is and how we can make it better.

Very interesting!

WOW at the brain!! A fascinating topic! This book explains the brains impact on beauty. It's got a mixture or very basic things like how important sleep is and then adds to that by teaching you about your circadian rhythm and how to reset it.

Very well written. Sections are short and concise. Information is easy to follow, with examples of past patients, and information you can start implementing right away.

The ONLY thing I didn't like in this book, was the reference to the BMI system (body mass index system). It's an inaccurate system which no one should follow. It doesn't take in to consideration how much lean mass a person has verse fat, and well..it's just a fail!!

I'd recommend this to others, both male and females can get something from it - although it's written specially for females. It's also never to late or to early to start following some of the advice.

The best book I've seen about Tsalagi

I stumbled across this book while browsing Lulu's website. I was delighted to finally find a textbook of the Cherokee language which presents a balanced approach to reading, writing and speaking Tsalagi, AND the grammar and structure of the language. Other available materials tend to give you words and phrases to memorize and "regurgitate" without giving much information at all about the grammar of this complex polysynthetic language, OR teaching you how to write in Sequoyah's wonderful syllabary (if they even introduce the script at all). Michael Joyner's book, used in conjunction with his website (and the CD-ROM also available from Lulu), teaches sounds and writing- giving the handwritten forms of the letters- and gives a gradual introduction to the grammar and structure of Tsalagi. It's not complete yet- this is intended to be the first volume of a series, I gather- but is the best introduction I've found- not to say the most reasonably priced!

Excellent Book!

This has by far been the best book for the Cherokee language! It is so good for learning the basics of the complex Cherokee verbal system. Using a simple vocabulary, this book teaches the reader how to form sentences and phrases in Cherokee, a skill which was lacking in another Cherokee lesson book I purchased. I highly recommend this book to beginners in the Cherokee language. However, I do hope to see a second edition soon, as I get the feeling this book is intended to be the first of a series. Well done!

Cherokee in my past

I actually had not started on the exercises in the book, but had pulled up the internet sites and purchased primary lined paper to practice with. I was showing my book to my sister (several relatives visiting) and my 10 year old niece asked what kind of book we were looking at. I showed her and she took over it immediately by getting paper and pencil and practicing the syllabary and definitions. Her first attempt at the syllabary were perfect, I couldn't believe it! She learned so much using your book this weekend, that I let her take it home with her. I am now going to order another for me. Thanks for providing an educational experience for a little girl who didn't know she was doing something educational, it was too much fun showing off to everyone.

Jeff Mitchell's dusty boots had already covered new ground when he wrote "Hiking the Endless Mountains" - the first hiking book to explore the beautiful forests and creeks of Pennsylvania's Endless Mountains. Written by the Pennsylvania native, "Backpacking Pennsylvania, 37 Great Hikes" has now established Mitchell's books as the most current and definitive guide series for hiking and backpacking throughout Pennsylvania. In "Backpacking Pennsylvania", Jeff travels beyond the Allegheny Plateaus to provide concise and well-written trail descriptions. Just enough information is provided for each trail system and Mitchell leaves it to the reader to put his book down and to just start hiking!

Jeff Mitchell's Preface in "Backpacking Pennsylvania" is a righteous testamony to those special places which are rapidly disappearing in the 21st Century. "By respectfully visiting and experiencing these places, we can appreciate and protect them" and "Backpacking reintroduces people not only to nature, but also to each other".

Fosse's life was full of conflict--a desire (unfulfilled) to star as performer as well as director, painful personal relationships, obsession with sex and a preoccupation with death that led him to recount the details of his heart attack in the movie All That Jazz . Basing his text on interviews, Gottfried examines Fosse's numerous unsatisfactory marriages and love affairs, and his tense dealings with collaborators and colleagues, revealing much about the backstage intrigues and vicissitudes of show business, but offering little of substance about either the shows themselves or Fosse's talent. Drama critic Gottfried, author of Broadway Musicals (Abrams, 1989), brings a wealth of Broadway lore to his biography of choreographer/director Fosse, who made a lasting impact on the dancing style of Broadway musicals. Fosse was a driving perfectionist who had such mega-hits as Broadway's Sweet Charity and the movie version of Cabaret , and such colossal failures as the movie version of Sweet Charity and his last movie, Star 80 , which combines his lifelong obsessions, sex and death. Three times married, the last to Gwen Verdon with whom he had his string of Broadway hits, Fosse was a compulsive womanizer. He remains a likable character despite this and other negative traits which Gottfried does not soften. Gottfried gives a more complete psychological portrait of this contradictory man than Kevin Grubb's Razzle Dazzle ( LJ 10/1/89), which was heavily illustrated. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 8/1/90.

Pure Fun

Maybe I'm biased: I'm a shrink. I lived in New York in the early 80's. I knew some of the people mentioned in the book. But this was the most fun I've had reading since Letters from a Nut. Full of tidbits about a raft of celebrities. Another reviewer complained about the lack of pictures. Why stop there? We need all the films, too. Must watch All That Jazz again ASAP, AND try to get my hands on Sweet Charity and Cabaret. A great ride!

Perhaps no longer THE source, but holds up well

(This review is of the Hardcover version.) ALL HIS JAZZ: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF BOB FOSSE by Martin Gottfried (1990, paperback edition 2003) was for many years the foundational biography of the legendary entertainer, choreographer and director who gave the world such entertainments as "Who's Got the Pain (When They Do the Mambo?)" from DAMN YANKEES, the Broadway blockbuster PIPPIN, the movies CABARET, ALL THAT JAZZ, STAR 80, and many other achievements; and the book still holds up well. As other biographers have done, Gottfried locates Fosse's sometimes conflicted personality and tendency to depression in his youth. He uses Fosse's earliest performing name, "Bob Riff," as a metaphor for his love/hate relationship with "razzle-dazzle" (and sometimes downright smut--young Fosse/Riff often did his taps in burlesque clubs on Chicago's North Side), while yearning for more prestige and authority, to be taken seriously as an artist. In warts-and-all fashion, Fosse's legendary womanizing and his various addictions to booze, tobacco, and amphetamines are dealt with, as well as the hard work and innovation that forged the definitive, and largely visual, "Fosse look" that is as recognizable now as it was when he died at age 60 in 1987.

It is inevitable that people will wonder which bio is now the one to read: this one from 1990, or the much more recent (2013) Fosse by Sam Wasson. While there is considerable overlap, FOSSE is about a third longer in the number of pages given over to text, the book even longer overall because it includes end notes as well. As part of that, FOSSE is able to cover more ground on the whole, although I personally would give ALL HIS JAZZ a slight edge on discussing how the films CABARET (1972) and ALL THAT JAZZ (1979) were developed. I was sad to catch a few easy mistakes in this book, though: the "beer garden" song in CABARET was called "Tomorrow Belongs to Me," not "Tomorrow the World Belongs to Me" as the book avers, and for all the loving discussion of the various "hospital fantasy" production numbers toward the end of ALL THAT JAZZ, the author manages to omit that the song sung by "Old [Girl]Friends" was the witty and allegorical "Who's Sorry Now?"

While either ALL HIS JAZZ or FOSSE will serve, a better course yet for the neophyte might be to buy or rent some of Fosse's most indelible movies as a representation of the man's style and for their sheer entertainment value, most particularly Cabaret: 40th Anniversary and All That Jazz, either of which at this point can be had fairly cheaply.

A Fine Biography of The Greatest American Choreographer That Ever Lived

Bob Fosse, in this reader's opinion, is, besides the greatest director\choreography of musicals, the greatest choreographer that ever lived. His brilliant, simplistic style has entertained millions and has shown an inpact in current pop culture.
Mr. Fosse himself was a fascinating man. A slightly short, mumbling chainsmoker, his many demons included alcohol, drugs, paranoia, sex and women. Mr. Gottfried lets us know about those demons. However, he gives interesting accounts of all of Fosse's work for stage and screen.
This book is excellent, but to truly learn about the genius that was Bob Fosse, this reader recommends Mr. Fosse's autobiographical film "All That Jazz."
