Must read for advanced novice and above

"Galen Rowell's Inner Game of Outdoor Photography" is a collection of articles written for Outdoor Photographer magazine organized into four broad categories. Interspersed between the articles are sections of photographs. Each article is cross-listed with relevant photographs, and vice-verse. This cross listing is an effective device; coming back to various photographs as I read the essays forced me to really think about them.
The first section deals with "creative and cognitive processes." These range from the inner desire needed to go out and get that shot to an almost scholarly examination - complete with annotated bibliography - of the processes involved in human sight and the differences between what people see and what film records. I found this section to be the strongest aspect of the book as well as the most useful and interesting.
The second section consists mainly of technical material ranging from how to pack your gear to ways to use flash in outdoor settings. It is pitched at a higher level than an introductory photo guide, suitable for an advanced novice like myself.
The third section is primarily a collection of travel stories, often only tangentially touching on photography. However, these articles provide the context in which many of the photographs in the book were taken. Arguably, context is the crux of photography. As Rowell points out, photographs are used to tell a story - though maybe not the one intended by the photographer.
The last section conveys Rowell's view on the positive and negative effects that photography and outdoor travel have on the natural environment, as well as on the art of color outdoor photography vis-�-vis fine art photography. These essays are thought provoking and, like the rest of the book, very well written.
I had feared from the title that I was in for a bunch of pseudo-spiritual babble, but instead I found a fairly deep, if meandering, discussion of the spectrum of what outdoor photography involves.

Not much of a "game", mostly "travel log"

I read some of the reviews about this book present on this site and was somewhat surprised to see mostly positive ones. Maybe it is just my perception or the expectation I had after reading these reviews but before buying the book that lead to my disappointment in the book. What were my expectations...? I did expect Galen to tell me what he thinks and feels before, during, and after taking those great pictures. I did NOT expect a HOW-TO book (which it is definitely not). I expected a book about artistic approach to the outdoor photography. What I found instead was mostly a travel log. The first 2 chapters were as close to my expectation as it ever got. The author talked some about his creative approach and very little about his technical one. The rest of the book doesn't even present his "photographic philosophy". He simply talks about his travels, places he visited, people he met. All that would be great for an illustrated travel book but not for a book that was supposed to tell me about how HE came to those pictures, what (in his opinion) made those pictures great or standing out (there is some of it but so little it almost doesn't exist). The book's title has "inner game" words in it. I wanted to know what that "inner" game was before, during, and after taking EACH picture (or at least most of them). Overall - disappointing and expensive for that.

The "Inner Passion" of Galen Rowell

If you're a serious photographer (amateur or pro) and find your interest in shooting lagging occasionally, Rowell's enthusiasm might be contagiousness enough to provide a cure. This man was passionate about photography and went to extraordinary ends to get the shots he visualized. The majority of the book deals with his philosophy of photography and how he accomplished what he did. There's also much excellent technical advice. The book's only shortcoming, from my very personal perspective (take it for what it's worth), is the undercurrent of Rowell's ample ego. Were the personal pronoun "I" deleted from the book, its page count would be reduced considerably. Nonetheless, I still strongly recommend "Inner Game" for the highly passionate and very personal account that it is - an extraordinary photographer's testimonial to a life totally devoted to the art of photography and love of nature. It makes you want to climb a mountain and take pictures!

WISDOM JOY AND GRACE FROM HIS MOST EMINENT HOLINESS POPE JOHN PAUL THE GREATER

This book grants us the joy and healing of experiencing the glorious and joyful wisdom and theology of the great and poor man who too quickly served us servants as Pope John Paul the First.

This book reveals how and why he must ever remain the First, the pre-eminent, the Greater of the John Pauls. This book reveals how nearly we remained a vibrant, vital, relevant, important, clarified, coherent, intelligent, loving, spiritual, challenging Church in the modern world, rather than the punishingly costly instrument for the personal mobilized self-glorification and brutally imposed limited vision of his successor. These words come from our final Universal, Apostolic, Catholic Pope, who does not as now treat the universal Church as a Germanic seminary classroom, passing out grades according to his particular orthodoxy.

For, this book reveals the great and universal compassion, joy and wisdom which was to be in continuation with the great Popes of joy John XXIII and of prudent widom Paul VI, rather than the decimated and crabby kingdom in which we now discover ourselves. Pope John Paul the Greater continued editing and revising this work of fictional letters to great figures of fiction and of history until shortly before his mysterious and unexpeceted death, having been named Pope in the briefest conclave in history. We Catholics gratefully receive this message in lieu of the great prophetic encyclicals which would have called us all together in loving joy and compassionate mercy of Our Lord Jesus Christ, rather than dividing us along secular political lines like a Polish National subdiocese. Within these pleasant pages we find our true Faith in action.

Any Catholic, especially in the programs for new converts, and especially we veteran and life long practitioners of Roman Catholicism, find solid nourishment within these rare pages, and the eternal words of our faith as applied brilliantly to familiar modern paradigms. Letters are written by this great Pope to Mark Twain, GK Chesterton, Charles Dickens (and separately to the Pickwick Club), to Marconi, Petrarch and to Pinocchio, among many others. We also read here letters written to our great saints, including Saint Luke, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, Saint Teresa of Avila, Saint Bonaventure, etc. The collection closes with a trepidatious memo to Jesus, which we must all dare to read to nourish our own communication with our Lord and Savior.

The collection opens with a very thoughtful, reflective and instructive general essay by John Cardinal Wright inspired by our brief Pope's infectious sincere smile, and a brief eulogy for the author by Father Angelo Beghetto.

Read it today, and dare to smile, and discover yourself and our Faith as you laugh out loud uncontrollably for joy, and weep, and remember. But it's all right. Jesus wept.

As always, the two leads work well together, their strengths and weaknesses complementing each other. Baldacci, always strong on suspense but occasionally clunky stylistically, finds his voice here. Not my favorite but got better

I elected to give this only a 3 because I thought the book was a little slow in the beginning and didn't care much for the mental hospital portion of the book. Seemed a little disjointed. Once that portion was over the book got better.

Great Series But a Bad Book

Uninspired with a ridiculous plot and a bunch of pseudo psychology. A poor attempt to make a political point about the CIA and big government. The first Baldacci book that fails at all levels. Flipped through pages in the hope it would get better but it never does. A waste of precious reading time. I love the King and Maxwell series and David Baldacci but, everyone is entitled to at least one failure and this is Baldacci's.

Three storylines that converge into one

Starts with lots backstory and then builds following multiple stores that converge into the finally.

In this story, like the previous one, you get to know more about the leading character ... in this case, Michelle.

Ended rapidly, a little to quick for me, but a good ending.

Children and parents will love sharing this book. For the child, it demonstrates how learning and "thinking outside the box" can be fun. Also, I like how it builds on the child's sense of achievement, thereby helping develop greater self-confidence.
For the parents, the instructions are clear, enabling them to maximise on what the book has to offer. It's a great opportunity for them to enjoy being involved in their child's development. I have no hesitation in recommending this book.

Written by three authors with differing backgrounds, one in political science, another in environmental health and health promotion, and the third in social psychology, this book reflects the myriad of perspectives essential to a comprehensive view of modern food policy. It attempts to make sense of what is meant by food policy; explores whether the term has any currency in current policy discourse, assesses whether current policies help or hinder what happens; judges whether consensus can triumph in the face of competing bids for understanding; looks at all levels of governance, across the range of actors in the food system, from companies and the state to civil society and science; considers what direction food policies are taking, not jsut in the UK, but internationally; assesse who (and what) gains or loses in the making of these food policies; and identifies a modern framework for judging how good or limited processes of policy making are.

About the Author
Tim Lang has been Professor of Food Policy at City University's Centre for Food Policy in London since 2002. He was appointed Natural Resources and Land Use Commissioner on the U.K. Government's Sustainable Development Commission in 2006. He is a regular advisor and consultant to the World Health Organization at global and European levels. He has been a special advisor to four House of Commons Select Committee inquiries (food standards [twice], globalization and obesity). In 2005-06, he chaired the Scottish N.H.S. Executive's Scottish Diet Action Plan Review. In 2005-08, he worked on the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) 'Food Supply in the 21st Century' programme. He is a Vice President of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health. He is co-author of 'Food Wars', 'The Atlas of Food' and 'The Unmanageable Consumer'. David Barling is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Food Policy at City University London. His research focuses on: the governing of the agri-food sector and of the food supply in relation to sustainability; and the politics of food standards setting at global, EU and national (primarily U.K.) levels. He has written numerous book chapters and journal articles on food policy. Externally, his appointments include: the expert advisory panel for the U.K. Prime Minister's Strategy Unit project on Food Policy 2007-8; the British Standards Institute Committee A.W./90 Quality Systems for the Food Industry (co-opted); U.K. Government's Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' Organic Action Plan team for England 2001-8; the Council of Sustain (the U.K. alliance of food-related N.G.O.s) and chair of Sustain's Good Food on a Public Plate Project (public procurement of sustainable local food) 2006-8; and the editorial board of the international journal Agriculture and Human Values. Martin Caraher is Reader in food and health policy in the centre for Food Policy at City University. He originally trained as an environmental health officer in Dublin. After working in the north west of Ireland he developed an interest in the public health and health promotion aspects of the work. He completed his Masters and doctorate in London, and since 1990 he has been working with Prof Tim Lang on aspects of food policy and helped establish the Centre for Food Policy 15 years ago at Thames Valley University and is now located at City Univer
