About the Author
The late Dr. Oliver A. Johnson studied at Oxford University in England, and received his doctorate in philosophy from Yale University. He was one of the founding faculty members of University of California at Riverside, and was chairman of the philosophy department. He served as the Academic Senate Chairman and secretary-treasurer of the American Philosophical Association Pacific Division. He is known for his writings on ethics and the foundations of knowledge.

The Ethics of Boredom

Johnson's "Ethics: Selections from. . ." is a text book.
This book takes some otherwise interesting philosophers and chops up sections of their work, spitting it all out on the page in a roughly chronological order of Western thought.
The choices Johnson made for philosophers to be represented in his book were good, but some of the ways that the information is presented leaves much to be desired.
For an introductory course in Ethics, this makes a passable book in that it covers all of the basics. The duel tables of context, one in chronological order and the other seperating the writers topically was a useful tool.
This book only skims the surface of ethics and is limited in its scope; making it useful only for an introduction course. The problem this leaves is that the reading sections tend to be thick and will not capture the attention of a reader unless they must read in order to pass a class.
The study questions at the end of each section are very basic, some times simple enough to be answered by high school students, but open enough that they work within the context of a college class room.
A slow read. This book should only be purchased by college students that are taking a course that requires them to buy it. Otherwise, the level of interest that this book has to offer is rather limited.

Aly looks critically at the idea of 'Arab-ness' and the ways in which ethnic subjects are produced, signified and recited in the city. Looking at everyday spaces, encounters and discourses, the book explores the lives of young people and some of the ways in which they ‘do’ or achieve 'Arab-ness'. Aly’s ethnography uncovers narratives of growing up in London, the codes of sociability at Shisha cafes and the sexual politics and ethnic self-portraits which make British-Arab men and women. Drawing on the work of Judith Butler, Aly emphasises the need to move away from the notion of identity and towards a performative reading of race, gender and class. What emerges is a highly innovative contribution to the study of diaspora and difference in contemporary Britain.

Clearly an Important work and Classic even for Insurgency type warfare

This book is an important and must have classic. For those that think that contemporary maneuver war has been replaced by post-modern insugency, don't bet the farm on it just yet. Certainly Mr. Lind in recent years has taken serious heat for his unconventional views ( no pun intended) on warfare; and if you are familiar with some of the controversy or have read his material you must set all that aside and buy this book anyway.

Despite the fact that this author does not have military experience, in hindsight, as a career soldier, I wish now that I would have had the benefit of this book when it was first published in 1985. This book is clearly written, provides first class examples and is the best book on manuever warfare, bar none.

If you are exploring insurgency and asymmetrical warfare you will still need this book.

For students of insurgency and terrorism you will need to buy this book and think about what the author conveys in terms of asymmetrical warfare, you will have new and wonderful revelations about the conduct of insurgency if you do.

A Great Job of Creating a Useful Tool from A Grand Theory

Lind has done a masterful job of moving Boyd from the Pentagon to the battlefield. He succeeded in keeping to the concept of a Handbook rather than a textbook.

Somehow he has distilled the famous all day slide brief ([...]) and extended it to the realities of land warfare. It's ironic that the Marines are most closely identified as having learned the lessons of Col Boyd, USAF. The Marine's pride is boundless, but it seldom keeps them from appropriating anything useful that happens to come into view. In this case it was some precious jewels.

Others, with far more military knowledge have commented on the applicability of these comments to warfare. I agree with others who have demonstrated that these concepts have a place in business, political campaigns and sports.

A final recommendation is that this book is a great read for anyone who watches and listens to the news. It will help the reader to understand what some of our troops are doing. As a small example, after the start of the Iraq war the press was filled with reports of Marines pressing ahead for days, without sleep, food and in some cases water. To the generals of CNN it seemed to be military incompetence, but to someone who read Lund it was evidence of success.

This is THE quintessential primer for Maneuver Warriors!

This primer should be on the reading list of every combat arms and combat support officer and NCO in our armed forces. Bill Lind, a civilian without any military experience, has demonstrated an extraordinary understanding of the art of war. His book has become the "underground bible" for Maneuver Warfare proponents. In this book he discusses the theory of Manuever Warfare and its origins, the principles and techniques required to employ maneuver warfare properly, and the education and training required to make it possible. Much of his work is a 'sort-of' adaptation of the sucessful Blitzkrieg theory. He even discusses the differences of bloody, Attrition Warfare (WWI Trenches) versus the more efficient, life-preserving Maneuver Warfare (Desert Storm). Mr Lind puts these thoughts in the simplest terms even a 'butter-bar' lieutenant could understand. He completes his discussion with a series of lessons written by an experienced USMC Field Grade Off! icer on each principle. Following easy lesson is a brief "homework" exercise designed to test your knowledge and understanding of each principle. William Lind's Maneuver Warfare Handbook is a must read for any serious-minded, professional soldier who wishes to become an exceptional leader and tactician.

Basically worthwhile

Anthropology is a fascinating subject, but what can you do with a degree in it? This book presents 49 articles that show how anthropological training can be applied to solve problems all over the world, from remote jungle villages to American corporations. I originally purchased this book for use as a supplementary textbook in an introductory Anthropology class, but we only read about half a dozen of the articles. But I liked the book and wanted to read more. So now post-graduation I have finally had time to read the entire book. What I like about it is the breadth of its subject matter. It pretty much touches upon every aspect of anthropology and there are constant surprises. Some subjects interest me more than others, so some of the articles were more enjoyable than others. My favorites were the articles dealing with archaeology and forensic medicine. The ones I did not like were the political ones in which the authors grind their personal axes. Some of these were poorly argued, cherry-picking examples while conveniently ignoring contrary evidence. But I can see their value in provoking classroom discussion. I would estimate that about ten percent of the book is leftist propaganda, which is relatively small in today's anthropological teaching milieu in America. A couple of the articles were obviously written by women who hate men so much that they don't even try to mask their misandry. Another criticism is that some of the articles were already somewhat dated when this edition came out in 2006. 21st Century society changes at a breakneck pace. In 2006, "social networks" were a teenage phenomenon. Today the average age of Facebook users is well over 40. This book may be really obsolete now. There is a new edition of this book, but many professors (like the one I had) prefer older editions that they are familiar with. In general, I think the book is worthwhile, despite about half a dozen truly expendable articles. I'd give this book three and a half stars, rounded up to four.
