Something missing ?

A friend of mine offered this book to Tenzin Namdak, actual head of B�n lineage, supposed to achieve rainbow body when he will leave. He didn't seem so much interested and said that the drawings are correct, but "something is missing. They didn't get the fruit", i.e. they won't achieve rainbow body.
Now, the question is "what" ? Maybe we have a first clue, in the fact that their approach is totally naturalist. There is only earth, nature, light... Where are the buddha fields, the revelations, the transmissions, one is supposed to get with the third vision ? Just read the life of Shardza Rinpoche and others. It's totally different.
Apparently it is possibe to get the visions (or a part of them) without getting the real meaning. Because, according to many teachings, there is no "matter" in the universe, only "beings" (what we call matter being alledgedly the "body" of beings, who we can't see because of our obscurations). But in this book, there are no beings, only matter.

Beautiful, Evocative Drawing of Togal Images

Luminous Heart of Inner Radiance - Drawings of The Togal Visions by Robert and Rachel Olds

Spiritually focused artists Robert and Rachel Olds culminated a lifelong Earth based spiritual path of meditative practice by going on an 8 year retreat practicing Tibetan Buddhism's and Bon's highest visionary path of Togal. Along the way, they documented with skilled, sensitive drawings documenting the unfolding progression of the four stages of Togal visions. To my knowledge, nothing of this kind has ever been presented in the public domain before.
Also distinctive in publishing these beautiful images of the Togal visions and their accompanying volume describing the actual practices that took them up to and through the path of Togal, Primordial Grace - Earth, Original Heart and The Visionary Path of Radiance, Rob and Rachel strip Togal of its here-to-fore religious and cultural baggage and restore it to its primordial, grounded in the Earth, roots. I realize this will be seen by some as a controversial description of a controversial act but surely, the Togal process of seeing the essential nature of the spontaneous presence of the primordially pure innate is antecedent to all forms of culture and all -isms.
Personally, the powerfully gentle and sensitive images in this volume deepened my faith and quickened my spirit. They led me to contact Rob and embark on this remarkable journey. In my experience, as the visions are beginning to develop, this process is increasingly engaging. I am gratefully finding myself silenced, awed and wanting to practice more than ever before in my 40 + years of spiritual focus. Enjoy!

I am so glad this book was written and illustrated. This is a clear and unencumbered account of the Togal visions as experienced by the authors. This book is very much a gift to anyone seeking a deeper truth about the true nature of reality.

Information is presented in a very intuitive manner. Ravindran presents several helpful examples to explain concepts. The book is an excellent tool for anyone working in supply chain, but by no means is it all encompassing.

At least the outside looks nice . . .

An impressive looking package from a distance, so if you simply want some shelf-candy to casually flip through - here it is - it's that and nothing more. Could have been much better if not for poor design (type lost to the gutters, blurry and pixelated images throughout) and missing content. Page 111 claims "here is a map of the Overworld" (for The Legend of Zelda) but I guess they forgot it, because it's nowhere in the book. An oversight indicative of this sloppy, slapdash compilation. A buy for only truly hardcore "have to have everything and anything that says Nintendo" collectors. I'll be returning mine. I'd rather have the shelf space for games.

It sure looks nice at a glance, but is mostly a disappointing read. I was excited to crack Playing With Power open, anticipating fun tips, artwork, NES history, and retrospective details on the classic games covered within. Instead, this book contains a distracting mixture of quality and hardly any history or behind the scenes bits. The tips are mostly good, covering point values and strategies for maximizing your score in arcade ports like Donkey Kong, warps in platformers like Super Mario Bros. for speeding through the game, and recommend routes through open worlds like Metroid. The artwork varies throughout the book. Some scans from old Nintendo Power articles look decent, but then an image of a sprite on the same page looks dark and blurry, as though captured by taking a poorly zoomed photo of an image on a monitor. Take the description of the Legend of Zelda on page 61, "With a little and a lot of courage, you'll conquer your adversaries..." A little what? Luck? Skyworld in Kid Icarus is misidentified as "World 1." The most aggravating oversight, however, is on page 111 in the Legend of Zelda guide. A bright heading declares "Here is a complete map of the overworld." Except it isn't. That's right. One of the most iconic world maps in gaming history didn't make it into the book because, by all appearances, someone forgot to paste it in. Oops!

Missing info is a huge buzzkill.

I hate to pile on, but I also found the missing Zelda map to be an incredible oversight. Made even crazier by the fact that the error is included on the insert showing on the outside of the package at the point of sale. See picture for reference. Since I got this through the mail, I didn't have a chance to spot the error before I bought.

We would say that for the most part, many people see the European Union as an organisation pursuing aims and objectives which are mainly economic. But, as pointed out in the foreword of this clear, lucid and quite absorbing book on anti-discrimination law in the European Union, the EU has emerged as `an active human rights organisation - not just one which accepts that its policies and acts are subject to human rights discipline.'

Granted, the EU is not commonly perceived in quite this light until one is reminded in this erudite volume from the Oxford University Press, that the European Economic Community from the beginning of its existence, `possessed rules forbidding discrimination, specifically on grounds of sex'.

As we review this book, we believe that this is important to note: `The right to equality of opportunity irrespective of sex,' say the general editors, `is fundamental to a civilized society... without it, the individual's talents cannot be exploited to the full, human dignity is compromised... inequality on the ground of sex is simply unfair.' It's therefore not unfair to say that the principle of equal pay for men and women was the basis on which the edifice of EU anti-discrimination law was constructed. It was there from the beginning of the European Union, and with us it remains.

This book puts forward an eminently readable and certainly forceful examination of -- and sustained analysis of -- anti-discrimination law in the EU in all its manifestations, which of course include nationality and sex, as well as part-time and temporary employment... racial or ethnic origin... religion or belief... disability... age... and sexual orientation.

In providing a detailed analysis of the general principles of EU law and the key concepts which underpin it, the book concludes by examining its utility. What, for example, are the ways and means by which individuals should ideally be protected against further discrimination, it asks... and what policies conceivably could further enhance equality of opportunity?

In view of the recent profound changes in EU law in the area of equality and non-discrimination over the last seven years, particularly following the enactment of the Treaty of Lisbon in 2009, this new second edition is especially important to acquire. Certainly, this book excels as a source of reference.

Meticulously footnoted throughout, it contains extensive tables of cases and of legislation, as well as a table of treaties and conventions and detailed index. Great adaptation

What I loved about this book is that it stays true to the story of the games, but it is also different. It truly pulls you back into the world of Lunar, but it is not fake like a typical novel adaptation of something else like a movie or game.

Someone else pointed out that there are many bigger words in the novel that one would not typically use, but that didn't matter to me. All you have to do it click on the word, and a dictionary.com definition pops up on the screen.

If you love the game, you will love this story. Actually, this story could pull you into the world of Lunar even if you've never played the game series.

I really hope that they continue to translate the rest of the books.

Overwrought, Under Edited & Amateurish

Alternate Title: Please Step Away From the Thesaurus

First let me say Lunar: The Silver Star is my favorite video game of all time. It was the first RPG I'd ever played (Shining Force CD doesn't count because that was a tactical RPG) and has been the standard barer ever since. The adventures of Alex, Nall, Ramus, Luna, Jessica, Mia, Nash, and Kyle are as dear and close to my heart as any story I've experienced. Since the Sega CD release I've purchased the game three more times (PSX, Game Boy Advance, and PSP). So, I'm not new to this rodeo.

To be blunt, this story feels like a fan-fiction written by a kid for a middle school homework assignment. And if it was I'd probably be giving it four stars! For an amateur work, it shows promise. But it's not an amateur work. It's written by Kei Shigema, writer of the original Sega CD version, and is being sold as a professional product. I'm sorry to say, it is not.

The prose is overwrought and meandering. Paragraphs are devoted to overflowing description that distracts far more than paints simply because you're wondering where it's all going. Very little is left to the imagination, and not in a good way. It smacks of trying too hard because the writer thinks that this is how a writer is supposed to write description. Also, I've not seen characters speak in such long monologues since my last viewing of a Kevin Smith film, and at least those were typically funny! Most of the spoken dialog swings between bland to over the top. There doesn't appear to be character under the dialog, just stereotypes. Not that even these stay consistent. In one scene Nash is very much literally laughing at the prospect of danger but when Alex reiterates the possibility of danger, Nash next to wets himself with fear. Really, the transition is just that abrupt.

I'm half wondering if this is simply the way novels are written in Japan. I've read a few and they all come away feeling like this. Over written and populated with manic characters.

By biggest peeve with the novel is the liberal use of five-dollar words. I'm a writer, so I feel my vocabulary is a little above average, but never in my wildest dreams would I make some of the reaches this writer did. Maybe the translator is to blame? I don't know. It certainly does feel more mechanical and less like art. Let me give you an example which made me laugh out loud: "Its origin, a poetic ballad passed down from parent to child and child to grandchild over countless generations; and Luna's voice seemed to vividly evoke a sentimental remembrance of every hope and dream left behind by the bygone ages as she voiced each syllabic word with nonpareil mellifluousness."

"Nonpareil mellifluousness"? Really? That's the best way to cap this sentence? Don't get me wrong, this entire sentence is a train wreck and "nonpareil mellifluousness" is simply the exploding passenger car at the end. But over and over and over - barely a page goes by - a very impressive sounding word takes the place of a 50-cent word that would have worked just a well, but not have brought the narrative to a screeching halt.

I come from the Stephen King school of End Your Dialog With "Said". "He said," "she said," whatever. If absolutely necessary an adjective from time to time. So, tell me why ending a piece of dialog with "... he said, rationalizing his decision to everyone." is better than "... he rationalized."? This happens all the time. Again, another example of over writing that you see from amateurs, not professionals.

I could go on, provide more examples (don't get me started on the ridiculous use of ellipses), but it's not worth the time. Honestly, I don't see anyone other than a fan of the franchise picking up this book. I am, and I did. And I'm sorry that I did.

Beautiful pictures with words

Kei Shigima creates many beautiful places with words, discussing descriptions of places and travelers. Later on they have funny quarrels between Nall and Nash, and the dialogue between characters is amazing.

About the Author
Jane S. Zembaty, professor of philosophy at the university of Dayton, specializes in classical Greek philosophy and social ethics. She coedited the first three editions of Biomedical Ethics, and her published work includes articles on Greek philosophy, such as "Plato's Republic and Greek Morality on Lying" and "Aristotle on Lying."

David DeGrazia earned a B.A. from the University of Chicago, an M.St. from Oxford University, and a Ph.D. from Gerogetown University, each in philosophy. He has been teaching philosophy and biomedical ethics at George Washington University since 1989. He is the author of Taking Animals Seriously (Cambridge University Press) and of articles published in such journals as Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, Public Affairs Quarterly, History of Philosophy Quarterly, and Southern Journal of Philosophy.

Thomas A. Mappes holds a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Dayton and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Georgetown University. He is professor of philosophy at Frostburg State University, where he has taught since 1973. He is the coeditor (with Jane S. Zembaty) of Social Ethics: Morality and Social Policy (McGraw-Hill, 4/e, 1992) and his published work appears in journals such as American Philosophical Quarterly and Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal. In 1985, the Frostburg State University Foundation presented him with the Faculty Achievement Award for Teaching.

Another ho-hum effort

As a professional philosopher with nearly 30 years of teaching experience at the college level I have taught numerous sections of general and applied ethics. During that time I have used several different texts and have read or perused countless more. Texts in applied ethics are readily available. Every major textbook publisher seemingly offers several. In determining whether or not to consider a text for adoption, several criteria come into play:

1. Does the text cover the major topics in the area? The Mappes and Zembaty text does this. However, so do most other applied ethics texts. And some of them have done a better job of keeping up with the current "hot" topics as well as some of the more recent articles on these topics.

2. Does the selection of articles for anthologization display a balance, with both (and in some cases all) viewpoints being fairly represented? Here too the Mappes and Zembaty anthology does a pretty decent job, but so do a lot of other anthologies.

3. Are there issues that I as the instructor consider relevant but that are not covered by most applied ethics texts? Of course, each instructor will have to answer this for himself or herself, so one's opinion is going to be somewhat subjective. Mappes and Zembaty have chosen to play it safe on this one and contain little that cannot be found in other anthologies.

4. Are there helpful overviews of each topic written by the editors/authors of the text? Here is one area where the Mappes and Zembaty anthology does a better job than most. Each of the issues is preceded by an introduction of several pages in which the options are clearly spelled out.

5. Is the price right? Let's face it. Textbooks are far too expensive and we would all like them to be cheaper. A few have a cost that is reasonable. Some are sky-high. Here too the Mappes and Zembaty anthology falls somewhere in the middle. However, one can probably find as good if not better an anthology in applied ethics that retails new for $20 less.

All in all, this is a very middling text. Therefore, it's worth three stars.

what a lovely book!

The Mappes/Zembaty reader has everything one would want in an introductory primer on ethics and social policy. The editors have collected well-argued and important essays by philosophers, jurists and laymen on most of the politically charged topics of today, from abortion to pornography to environmentalism. Unfortunately, the book has not been updated to include any treatment of behaviors made newly possible by the Internet; perhaps a newer edition will accommodate this angle.

An average applied ethics text
