Military Trade, by Steven Zeeland

A same-sex attraction for soldiers and sailors spans the globe and predates the term “homosexual” by several thousand years. But these days “military chasers” are likely to be seen as doubly incorrect. Most are gay men who pursue straight men. And, many of them do it in public. What continues to motivate so many men to brave arrest, violence, and the scorn of gay leaders who condemn any non-gay homosexual desire as “internalized homophobia”?

In Military Trade (now updated to include an expanded photo insert!), Steven Zeeland, author of Sailors and Sexual Identity, The Masculine Marine, and Barrack Buddies and Soldier Lovers, brings together an edgy, enlightening, and richly entertaining collection of voices with a passion for servicemen, including:

  • a TV talk-show host who pimped Marines to Hollywood stars
  • a heavy metal superstar who dreams of being reincarnated as a Marine boot
  • a women “trapped in a gay man’s body” who seduces Marines online then dominates them in person with strap-on dildos
  • a former Force Recon Marine who complains of being chased by civilians but is now a Marine-chaser himself
By turns steamy, hilarious, appalling, and deeply moving, Military Trade challenges assumptions about both chaser and chased and poses pointed questions about the wisdom of those who seek to divide the world into “straight” and “gay.” The interviews and essays collected in this book suggest that, paradoxically, for many men the advances of the gay rights movement have actually made it more difficult to form affectional bonds with other men. Gay sex has never been more openly advertised. But the military love of comrades is something that gay life can’t offer. Military Trade offers groundbreaking insight into:
  • the difference between “military chasers” and uniform fetishists
  • why gay men prefer sailors and Marines over soldiers and airmen
  • the surprising range of sexual, “buddy,” and even love relationships “chasers” form with servicemen
  • the nuances of “trade” and civil-military male prostitution
  • what has been overlooked in the “sex panic” debate about men who have sex in public places
For anyone interested in queer theory, the construction of masculinity, or sex between men outside of gay urban culture--and for anyone who has ever thrilled at the sight of a man in uniform--Military Trade is must reading.

Intriguing, Disturbing, and Often Very Funny
By A Customer
After producing three very insightful books on their quarry, Zeeland provides his readers with an equally intriguing, ocassionally disturbing, and often very funny look at the hunters - the "chasers' of military men. Zeeland examines what motivates these men (and, at last, one woman), but unlike his previous books, in which many of his interviews were fascinatingly intimate portraits of friends, lovers, and acquaintances, Zeeland for the most part steps back and lets these chasers tell their own tales without deeply challenging their motivations and assumptions about the military and military men.
For example, most of the chasers profess to being drawn to the military ideal of loyalty, fidelity, and patriotism, despite the fact that their actual experiences with military men as they tell them often prove otherwise, and few show any insight into the very real working class limitations that lead much of their quarry to join in the first place. This is particularly interesting when one considers the fact that for the most part these chasers are drawn to enlisted men, yet they frequently differ from them significantly in politics, education, and class background, and often show little genuine understanding of them. Then there are those chasers beset by a sort of sexual "Stockholm Syndrome," who find their own lifestyles and political beliefs changed by their exposures to the subjects of their desire. All of these are issues worthy of exploration, but for the most part Zeeland lets these accounts raise more questions than they answer. This reader would love to see more in-depth study by Zeeland of all these issues. Perhaps in a second study of such chasers?
As a woman who was herself a mild military chaser who ended up married to one of her USMC quarry, if there is a second study I would enjoy reading about more women like myself. Indeed, "Military Trade" would have benefited not only from interviews with more women military chasers but also with perhaps an examination of the very gender-bending in which we women indulge in much of our chasing.
At the heart of all of Steven Zeeland's books is a challenge to our assumptions about sexual identity, and this reader, who has done much of just that, would love to see an even more extensive exploration of how both men and women cross the boundaries, as it were, whether chasing military or not.
However, for all the book does offer us, and all the questions it raises, "Military Trade" is a valuable addition to Zeeland's growing canon of studies of the fluidity of sexuality and the cult of the military. Well done!

THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO HOW TO PICK-UP A MARINE
By A Customer
As a life-long military chaser, I was struck by the "how-to" quality of this fascinating collection of interviews. Contained in these pages is the collected wisdom of men (and one woman) who have dedicated much of their lives to the successful pursuit of our brave young men in uniform. Adapting their various styles of hunting to the reader's needs will supply all one needs to find love, or at least lust, from many Marines and sailors.
Zeeland's Military Trade is the Damron guide for gays who seek authentic straight men. My greatest fear is that this book will continue to be a best seller; and that the streets of my Marine Corps desert oasis in Southern California will become crowded with new competitors for jarhead attention.

I expected it to be a bit fluffy, but it was much darker.
By Black Heart Ali
Barbie Girl has the potential to be a great YA read, if not for a few minor flaws and one fairly big one. I'll get to that; first, let me tell you all the things that are right about this book.

Barbie is a damaged girl from a broken home. Not damaged in the way everyone thinks; she wears a tough skin, flirts and teases to get what she needs, and doesn't let anyone give her any crap for it. Everyone thinks she is nothing more than drugged out crazy slut. Though she doesn't argue with them, she is none of those things. What she really is, is a poor girl with a drugged out crazy mother and an autistic little brother who relies on Barbie for care. Barbie will do anything to graduate and get Everett away from Alabama and their mother. Graduating means passing Algebra, which she currently is not doing. Hoping Dylan can tutor her into graduation, she bites the bullet and asks for his help. Something she does not often do and especially not from Dylan.

I liked Barbie, quite a lot actually. She's a rare beast in the teen world. The skirts she wears would put me in an early grave if I was her mother, but she's a good girl at heart. Always there to take care of everyone else with no thought to herself.

Dylan has all the makings of a good guy, if he could just get out of his own head and the perfect imaginary world he's designed there. He wants to do the right thing but he's so far out of the loop that he doesn't always realize what that is. Dylan aggravated me, often, but to no fault of his own. It's more through circumstance than choice and I could empathize with him, for the most part.

Acosta created some very intriguing characters. Not only with Barbie and Dylan but also their families and friends. Third, Dylan's best friend, is amazing. I loved him from start to finish. If only we could all have a Third in our lives. Roxie, a goth (ish ~ her room is pink, and she listens to Taylor Swift) girl comes in late to the story but in a huge way. I liked her very much too and hope to get much more of both of these two in Barbie World (book #2).

This book did not take me where I thought it would. I expected it to be a bit fluffy (really, her name is Barbie Starr), but it was much darker. Barbie is not a little princess with normal teenage girl problems. Her life is tragic and Dylan is the first bright spot she's ever allowed herself to hope for. But life never works out quite like we hope for, does it? The ride these kids take is tragic and heartbreaking at its core and it's not the happiest of endings. This isn't a fairytale where Malibu Barbie gets her Ken and they drive off into the sunset in a pink convertible Corvette, missing every speed bump in the way.

The problems I mentioned earlier are few and small. Except for one. The one major thing that holds this novel back is the editing. Now, I am a fan of indie authors and read a ton of self published books and usually make no comments about editing. I understand how incredibly hard it is to self edit and to pay for professional editing. That said, Barbie Girl needs it and I hope it becomes successful enough to get a bit of extra help there because the story itself is a good one. But there were too many times where I felt like I was reading a print out from one of those software programs where you speak and it types it for you. Too many words were, well... just wrong. I am not going to say any more about it though, I understood what was happening throughout the book and that is really what matters. I just know some have a problem with it and I would not feel right not mentioning it.

I also want to take a second to applaud Acosta for dealing with some fairly mature subject matter without ever making it feel cheap or too sleazy or crude. I think she really kept her target audience in mind and wrote a book about struggle, growth, love, responsibility and bravery.

Enjoyable story; some frustrating parts to it, but it did keep me reading
By S
When I bought this book at another retailer, the words "Baby Doll Series" were not beside the title, so that ending came as a surprise to me. Was not expecting a cliffhanger and that this was going to be a continuation series, a four-part series at that. I have to admit the ending annoyed me some, leaving me just a little frustrated. More than that, though, I was frustrated by the hero. Man, did Dylan gall me at times. I know he's a teen-age boy, both leads are in high school, and teenagers have growing up to do, but Barbie was twice the person Dylan was.

Yes, this YA story has the troubled teen going on; Barbie is literally from the wrong side of the tracks. She's got the neglected little brother, the falling-down house, the negligent, drug-addicted mother, and she's got a bad-girl rep at school. But even with all that, stuff that's been done before, I still cared about Barbie and even came to love her. I cried at a couple points in the story. Poor Barbie trying to be something, longing for a better life, longing for something good, something like Dylan, but that's one problem I have with this romance: I don't think he's good enough for HER.

I kind of liked him at first. He's got the nerd thing working for him, and I do love a cute nerd hero. But he is so hung up on little freaking perfect Katie. Katie is the mean girl, the fake girl, and when Dylan looks at her, she is a slow-motion reel of beauty and grace. I hated her. And I began to hate him for being fake like her. Yes, it is high school with all the requisite drama, but I was so angry at him for saying he loved Barbie but would still find himself wrapped up in Katie. There is some angst there, seeing Dylan with his arm around Katie, kissing Katie, but he is upset with Barbie and his best friend, Third. A big misunderstanding there. But still, I expected more from Dylan. He's so caught up in appearances, in right and wrong, and he's so judgmental.

His character definitely needs to grow some, to evolve, and I guess the author plans to show us that as the series continues. Sometimes his character made no sense to me, but maybe I'm too long out of high school and don't understand teen-age boys. As it stands now, I have no desire to even see Barbie with him. I can only hope that the author puts some good grovel time in store for Dylan. I would relish that. I'm a mean old woman who wants him to suffer. As the story ends, I'm hopeful of that because the author at least shows us Barbie showing fake boy and his fake girlfriend that Barbie can give as good as she gets. Can you tell I like Barbie? She's the stand-out of the story. She makes this story.

I also loved Third. I LOVED him, the chubby cutie, so sincere and steadfast. I was to the point of thinking, Barbie, pick him, pick him, and forget Dylan. I can't tell you how lovable Third is. There is a prom scene that was so sweet. Kind of reminded me of "Pretty In Pink," and I loved that movie. Very similar feeling here in this story. Girl thinks she's not good enough, when really it's the boy not good enough for her. Plus, Barbie ends up with some quirky, lovable new friends, and I guess Third would be Duckie. And then, we have that prom scene, with Barbie in her second-hand, 'vintage' dress. Very PIP.

In this first story, we see Barbie pretending to be Dylan's girlfriend. She'll up his cool factor if he tutors her, all the while Dylan is hoping this will increase his appeal to Katie. But along the way, people fall in love, the ones you think will fall and some you're not expecting to. There is also some heart-breaking violence, under-age drinking, some language, and mild sexual situations. The story leaves the reader very much hanging, a lot of loose ends to tie up. I do think I will read the next part of the series, if only to see what happens to Barbie.

The story is told in first-person, alternating from both leads' points of view, and I do happen to like that in a story. There are typos and editing issues in this book, commas needed here and there, punctuation issues, run-on sentences and several misspelled words, just things that I do notice, but I do tend to give allowance to that if the story pulls me in. And BARBIE GIRL did do just that. It's very teen YA with high school drama, and I think for the price it is worth checking out. Overall, I enjoyed BARBIE GIRL and the drama. Even with the issues mentioned, there is heart to this story, and it all centered around a vulnerable but tough, young heroine.

I'm really enjoying Barbie and Dylan's stories. This book wasn't what i thought it would be at all. Yeah ok so i thought "Barbie Girl", this is going to be another hot stuck up girl who wants to be popular and hurt everyone along the way. OMG! I was soooo wrong. This book is nothing like that at all.
Barbie might look like the typical Barbie Doll but she does not act like one at all. She is just a confused girl trying to numb her problems away. Until the day Dylan comes into her life that is and everything changes. I love Dylan but i was so frustrated with him only seeing barbie in the way all the rumors at school portrayed her to be. Boys are so naive. Dylan starts to tutor Barbie in math and as they spend time together he starts to see Barbie in a new way. Barbie doesn't care what people say about her. She's just Barbie, messed up family and all. Dylan wants so much to be able to be like her but can't get over the fact of what the kid at school might think.

Barbie has finally let the walls around her heart fall down to let Dylan in. Shes actually falling really hard for him. They are great until there is a huge miss understanding at Thirds house, Dylan's supposed best friend.. Dylan wont let Third or Barbie explain and turns his back on them. Ok, I'm thinking huge jerk now.

What do you think Dylan does now? Stupid Stupid boy..

I love Third. He reminds me of a great friend I had back in high school. He's a bit chubby and awkward but a great friend. The one's you could just be yourself with and let loose. Third understands Barbie and he see's her for what she truly is inside. Barbie has never had a friend like him before.

Barbie isn't all tight clothes and bad attitude. Shes got a soft side screaming to come out. that is if you just let her be herself and get beyond that huge wall she's put up.

I am seriously in ah of what that girl went through. No one should ever be put in a situation like that. oh and whats with the ending?? OMG! I checked goodreads looking for the next book. I don't see it. please oh please tell me its coming soon. I need more Dylan and Barbie and so will you once you've read this really great book. . :)

Don't let the positive stars fool you
By Cindy
Ya lost me. I downloaded the sample and thought this book had an interesting plot line going for it, and strong lead characters. Then it just got worse, and before I knew it, it was completely in the gutter.

After this line, I promptly closed my kindle (and trust me I had been fighting the urge to do so for a while)
"You need to stop questioning me. I'm the one with dick, and the sooner you realize that, the easier this will be. Trust me, baby, you'll start too like it that way."

Not to mention the physical abuse at school Elle suffered was just no realistic. She is not so good a liar that she can fool her school and her parents, whom in their current financial state, I wonder how they paid for so many stitches? Yes, I know that gangs (and thusly mafias) can run schools, but this isn't some scary public school. This is a top dollar private school where apparently none of the rich mafia families care when their kids come home with their faces bloodied? Not likely.

I really liked this book
By gt
I really liked this book. The characters were well developed. I love Nero, I just wish there was more of his possessive dominant side. Elle is a tough one, she stands up for her only friend Chloe who p'd me off in the bathroom scene. I felt the end was too abrupt. I wanted a little more of their lives with him in the mafia role and how she dealt with it. Great story line. Overall good read.

Spartan Women, by Sarah B. Pomeroy

This is the first book-length examination of Spartan women, covering over a thousand years in the history of women from both the elite and lower classes. Classicist Sarah B. Pomeroy comprehensively analyzes ancient texts and archaeological evidence to construct the world of these elusive though much noticed females. Sparta has always posed a challenge to ancient historians because information about the society is relatively scarce. Most existing scholarship on Sparta concerns the military history of the city and its heavily male-dominated social structure--almost as if there were no women in Sparta. Yet perhaps the most famous of mythic Greek women, Menelaus' wife Helen, the cause of the Trojan War, was herself a Spartan. Written by one of the leading authorities on women in antiquity, Spartan Women reconstructs the lives and the world of Sparta's women, including how their status changed over time and how they held on to their surprising autonomy. Proceeding through the archaic, classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods, Spartan Women includes discussions of education, family life, reproduction, religion, and athletics.

Review

"Spartan Women is a book that all ancient historians and classicists should add to their reading lists and personal collections. Sarah B. Pomeroy is already a scholar of great reputation in women's studies in the classical world, and this book adds to her reputation as a trailblazer in this dynamic field. Pomeroy has created a new classic that I predict will be part of the academic canon for years to come." --HISTORY: Reviews of New Books

"Sarah Pomeroy's new book is a pioneering and important work, a thorough and painstaking study by perhaps the leading scholar of ancient Greek women's history. Thanks to this groundbreaking book, historians are now in a much better position than perhaps ever before to treat the daughters of Helen not as exemplars or myths but as real human beings." -American Historical Review

"The book makes a valuable contribution to ancient Greek history and will immediately take its rightful place as the standard work in any language on a major but astonishingly long-neglected topic.... Pomeroy's female-oriented interrogation of the record is one that needed to be made, and in so doing she has significantly advanced our understanding of a critical--and diagnostically interesting--chapter in the history of women."--Bryn Mawr Classical Review

"Spartan Woman is a landmark in the history of ancient women because it attempts for the first time to offer an account of the lives of both elite and non-elite Spartan women and to do so by sifting through a very difficult body of evidence.... In Spartan Women, readers will find an exhaustive survey of the available information on the subject."--New England Classical Journal

"The world's top scholar on women in antiquity examines the lives of citizen women in militaristic Sparta.... Her analyses of women's health, education, fitness, wealth, leisure, self-image, social prominence, and religious power are cogent.... Pomeroy's book offers the best current account of the central role of women in Spartan society.... Highly recommended."--Choice

"Spartan Women is a masterly synthesis of its subject that is not only enriched by nearly a generation's accomplishments in the historiography of women, but also informed by a wise empathy for its subjects. An invaluable resource for students of antiquity, this book will also be provocative reading for anyone fascinated by the variegated textures of women's historical experiences."--Thomas J. Figueira, Rutgers University

"Drawing in part on approaches to women's history adapted by feminist historians, Sarah B. Pomeroy offers the most detailed study of Spartan women to date. Her thematically-organized chapters stress how Spartan women differed from their contemporaries, especially Athenians. Her appendix describing and evaluating the full range of our fragmentary historical, literary, and material sources illuminates the special challenge that she undertook in writing this book."--Helene P. Foley, Barnard College, Columbia University

"Spartan Women is the first full-length historical study of its elusive subject ever published. This is not surprising. The sources--meticulously laid out here in a wide-ranging appendix--are a historian's nightmare. Through this minefield Professor Pomeroy moves sure-footedly, armed with encyclopedic knowledge, a papyrologist's precision, speculative courage, and what Dr Johnson memorably described as 'a bottom of good sense.' No one will ever say the last word on any aspect of Spartan culture; but Spartan Womenis a wonderfully thorough, sane, and for the most part convincing exploration of a controversial topic."--Peter Green, University of Iowa

Being feminine - Spartan style
By D. Roberts
This is a one-of-a-kind exhaustive study on the lives of Laconian women. As Sparta was a closed society, not a whole lot is known about how the men lived, and even less is known about its female denizens. The sparse availability of primary sources on Spartan women makes any study of them rather difficult.

Sarah Pomeroy has consolidated just about everything we know, we think we know as well as what we might hypothosize about knowing about the lady Spartans. This book is a well-researched treatise on what their lives were, or at least could have been like some 2,500 years ago.

Ironically enough for a militaristic state, Spartan women enjoyed myriad freedoms and rights that were denied basically all other women of the classical age. As we look in hindsight, these factors weigh in to give them much more historical interest than women in other Greek city states. Pomeroy does an excellent job of delineating these various traits that separated them from alternative Greek social norms.

This book is highly recommended for both aficionados as well as persons interested in historical women's studies. Either way, this text has a wealth of information that will elucidate the lives of both Spartan women as well as Spartan men.

Sparta: A Unique Society
By Arnold E. Bjorn
While historians in antique and modern times alike have perhaps overemphasized the "alien" elements of Sparta's culture, it is clear that this Greek city-state was in many respects genuinely different from her contemporaries. Uniquely for her time, she subordinated the privileges of her citizens to the greater good of the State. In a day when mass education at public expense was elsewhere not even considered in theory, Sparta enlisted all her children in a state-run school until well past present-day high school graduation age. An egalitarian and collectivist ethos was consciously fostered, along with patriotism and civic responsibility. Every male citizen was expected to be a soldier first and foremost, putting the public welfare above his own. Only reservists held the right to vote, and only veterans of long military service could be elected to the Spartan Senate.

This military republic, instituted before the more liberal democracy of Athens saw the light of day and in an age when primitive monarchy and a largely night-watchman state were otherwise the norm, has been differently assessed in different times and places. Many modern observers have found a hint of fascism in Sparta's intensely nationalist and "militarist" civic-duty ethic. But in Antiquity her efficient and "idealistic" system inspired much admiration throughout the Hellenic world and beyond. Plato based his utopian Republic in large measure on Sparta's constitution, which was also praised by such intellectuals as Critias and Xenophon. Aristotle, on the other hand, perhaps the greatest Greek philosopher of all, was harshly critical of Sparta. But his criticisms were not the ones we would expect from present-day liberals: That Sparta was militaristic, denied human rights, was "racist" against non-Greeks or the like. Aristotle approved of all that. What annoyed him was rather that the Spartans did not properly control their women: They owned property, spoke freely in public and occasionally even had a say in politics!

To give context to such a statement, we must note the conditions elsewhere among the Grecians. There, and (so it seems) particularly in democratic Athens, women played a very limited role in polite society. The typical Athenian citizeness married young, had essentially no economic rights and did not participate in politics. A proper wife was expected to stay indoors, and modestly remain out of sight if her husband entertained guests; only poor women and female slaves were generally seen outside the home. As the historian Thucydides wrote, the greatest praise a woman could earn was if she was never mentioned, whether for good deeds or evil. It goes without saying that education for women was largely unheard of. In short, this was a highly "patriarchal" society, which some have compared to the Islamic cultures of our day.

Sparta was very different, in that her women were afforded an important role in public and economic life, and generally more highly regarded than was the norm in Hellenic society. Precisely how much so and in what ways is the subject of the present book.

Sarah Pomeroy has previously written on "Women in Classical Antiquity" (1975); here she concerns herself exclusively with the Spartanesses. Unfortunately, the surviving sources on Sparta are limited, leaving the historian less to work with than we might have hoped for. On the other hand, this means that nearly all the ones relevant to this study's subject can be addressed in one book. (An appendix provides a useful introduction for beginners to the ancient sources in question.) Thus, Pomeroy's research is good, but the available hard facts must of necessity be supplemented with a good deal of guesswork to provide anything like a complete picture. While I agree with many of Pomeroy's deductions, some appear in my eyes a little too speculative. It happens more than once that she seizes upon what I would consider a very tenuous piece of evidence and extrapolates an elaborate argument from it; on these occasions, one might prefer a more cautious approach.

Nevertheless, taken altogether her image of the Spartan woman is a largely sound and compelling one. Readers not already familiar with Sparta may be surprised at a system that seems remarkably "modern" in many respects, yet was based on fundamentally anti-liberal principles. Spartan girls as well as boys were educated, with their curriculum including music, poetry, literature, philosophy and perhaps a little mathematics, as well as gymnastics and sports. Unlike the men, they did not receive military training, although they took part in martial sports such as javelin-throwing and wrestling; Plutarch also enigmatically writes that part of their training was purposed to make them able to "defend themselves, their children, and their country" (p18). (Perhaps this would refer to self-defense against criminals or insurgents?) Spartan law also stipulated that they should marry later than was common elsewhere in ancient Greece, apparently no earlier than around age twenty.

Pomeroy points out that as with the boys, this education was not primarily intended for the girls' own benefit, but to make them better, healthier and more productive citizenesses of the Spartan state. But inevitably, it improved their individual lives as well. As adults, they had use for their learning as responsible members of society. In Sparta, where many men were on extended regular military deployment, it was expected of women to take a larger part in the day-to-day management of family businesses and property. (Aristotle complained that women effectively "ruled" Sparta and controlled its wealth, but this would seem a polemical exaggeration. In all likelihood ultimate authority in the family still rested with the husband; but Spartan marriages were probably rather more "complementarian" than was the fashion elsewhere among the Hellenes.) Nor were women wholly without a voice in public affairs. Historians tell of women who were admitted to the kings' councils. Examples of woman poets and even philosophers are also known, though how common they were is impossible to tell.

An interesting observation Pomeroy makes is that Sparta was famous in Antiquity for the beauty of her women. Going by modern stereotypes, we would expect that Sparta's relatively "empowered" women should be caricatured as mannish and unattractive -- Especially as Sparta's austere laws banned cosmetics, perfume and luxurious dress and jewelry. Yet the exact opposite was the case: Spartanesses were described as tall, blonde and beautiful, or by hostile writers as dangerously seductive. Pomeroy believes that this stereotype carries an echo of actual impressions: Their healthier style of living and more intellectual culture would, on average, have made them more attractive companions than the typical woman of, for example, Athens, whose life and opportunities were much more limited. An interesting thesis, if obviously one that is necessarily difficult to test.

* * * * *

In all, "Spartan Women" provides an intriguing attempt at reconstructing the life of women in the unique society that was ancient Sparta. I would recommend Pomeroy's study to all who take an interest in this society; many will probably, like myself, disagree with her on some points, but still by and large approve of her general conclusions. And if nothing else, it provides an excellent guide to the primary sources, so the student can access these and make up his own mind.

Most interesting book I've read this year
By Fifth Generation Texan
All those intriguing images of Spartan women from art and literature! Of course I wanted to know more about them. But how? Archaeologists and historians have interpreted such facts as survived, along with surviving propaganda written about them at the time – all of it in classical languages that I could not read – according to their own (and often quite male) biases. That is why I am so grateful for Sarah Pomeroy’s book. An expert on women and families in Ancient Greece, Pomeroy is also a resourceful scholar of the utmost integrity and common sense who works her way around and through the omissions and layers of bias to provide a portrait of Spartan women that is richer and more realistic than any hitherto available. This is the most interesting book I have read this year.

None the less this is the best account of a soldier's impressions of the revolutionary war
By Irvin Gerks
Martin wrote this when he was 70 and was recalling war experiences that occurred in his late teens. I'll bet that most of his fading memories are fortified by a vivid imagination. None the less this is the best account of a soldier's impressions of the revolutionary war. I am about a third of the way though it and find it to be as readable as "Red Badge of Courage" or "All Quiet on the Western Front".

Meet A Man Who Made "US" Possible
By Wayne A. Smith
Private Yankee Doodle, the diary of Joseph Plumb Martin, is an excellent account of the Revolutionary War told from the soldier's view.
Martin campaigned almost continuously from the beginning of the War through Yorktown (with the exception of the first winter after his initial three month service). He lived much of what have become the hallowed tales of our epic struggle for nationhood. He was at the Battles of Brooklyn, Harlem Heights and White Plains, endured Valley Forge (though for most of that winter stationed away from the camp as a forager), Monmouth, the other terrible winter encampments and Yorktown to name a few. Through it all, Martin marched, froze, starved and suffered for his service. It is remarkable that he kept at it for most of the war. (One reads of the constant lack of food (often for two or days) and is amazed that more soldiers didn't simply just quit.) It is more remarkable that he kept at it in fairly good humor - though he did parade with the Connecticut troops who conducted a minor mutiny over the lack of provisions. (An incident that Washington reported to Congress as more worrisome to the cause than the British force occupying New York.)
Martin is a good storyteller and raconteur. The reader will not find detailed accounts of battle here. In fact, battle is mentioned rather matter-of-factly. What is delightful to find is an account of the day in and day out hardships of life in Washington's army. Stories abound of camp life, foraging, marching, guard duty, scrapes with Torries, the hunt for clothing and the other ever-present challenges that soldiers had to endure and perform to simply survive between battles.
This is a wonderful book that I highly recommend.

Study of the Revolution should begin with Martin's memoir.
By A Customer
It is unfortunate your format allows only five stars; on a scale of one to five, Joseph Martin's memoir is an eleven! As a university history professor, reenactor and volunteer at Brandywine Battlefield, I have been recommending "Private Yankee Doodle" for many years to anyone with any interest in history at all. It is the best account of the American Revolution by any participant on either side. To really know the War of Independence, you should read Joseph Plumb Martin's great memoir. Almost anyone who has ever read the book will say that.
Too many of the great events of history were either unreported, or told only by leaders bent on demonstrating their own greatness. "I came. I saw. I conquered!" We all know Caesar did it by himself without the Roman legions. Luckily, sometimes someone else who had no particular reason to flatter or even like the leader wrote about what happened. The Spanish conquest of Mexico is best seen through the blind eyes and extraordinary recollections of Bernal Dias de Castillo, who despised Cortez. The court of Louis XIV lives in the jaundiced memories of the Duc de Saint Simon. Martin, Dias and Saint Simon, despite differences in time, place and language, speak with similar literate, irreverant, funny, cynical, and bitter voices.
One reads Martin with wonder. They suffered so much! The Revolution becomes real. What were the soldiers like? Now we know. There is heroism at the Battle of Long Island, for example, but it is the hunger, cold and discomfort readers are likely to remember best, along with Martin's own personality. It is no coincidence that all three of the television series on the Revolution have quoted and used Martin so much.

Homies and Hermanos: God and Gangs in Central America, by Robert Brenneman

Why would a gun-wielding, tattoo-bearing "homie" trade in la vida loca for a Bible and the buttoned-down lifestyle of an evangelical hermano (brother in Christ)? To answer this question, Robert Brenneman interviewed sixty-three former gang members from the "Northern Triangle" of Central America--Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras--most of whom left their gang for evangelicalism. Unlike in the United States, membership in a Central American gang is hasta la morgue. But the most common exception to the "morgue rule" is that of conversion or regular participation in an evangelical church. Do gang members who weary of their dangerous lifestyle simply make a rational choice to opt for evangelical religion? Brenneman finds this is only partly the case, for many others report emotional conversions that came unexpectedly, when they found themselves overwhelmed by a sermon, a conversation, or a prayer service. An extensively researched and gritty account, Homies and Hermanos sheds light on the nature of youth violence, of religious conversion, and of evangelical churches in Central America.

Review

"A courageous scholar, Brenneman has undertaken extensive interviews with former members of some of Central America's most lethal street gangs who have converted to evangelical and Pentecostal Christianity...This well-written book reveals much about the appeal of contemporary evangelical churches. It also provides a terrifying picture of an impoverished and exceptionally violent setting." -The Christian Century

"The the book is a remarkable study, rigorous in its methodology, thorough in its scope, and penetrating in its insights. As a bonus, it's accessible without dumbing-down and learned without getting wonky." -Rudy Nelson, Books & Culture

"A fascinating window into how street-tough gangbangers abandon the vida loca for evangelical Christianity, trading one set of identity markers, community, and mores for another. Homies and Hermanos describes how religious conversion provides Central American pandilleros with one of the only ways to leave gang life that does not end in the morgue. Beautifully written and compellingly told!"
--Virginia Garrard-Burnett, author of Terror in the Land of the Holy Spirit: Guatemala under General Efran Ros Montt, 1982-1983

"Brenneman provides a new twist in the gang literature: the surprising parallels between emotional rituals and public display of symbols in both the violent gangs and evangelical churches of Central America. These are the poles of attraction in a market for emotional energy, allowing ex-gang members an escape from membership-to-the-death if they show genuine conversion that the gang respects. In this ritual economy, only one powerful ritual can substitute for another. Brenneman's time-oriented, processual approach advances both theory and practice."-- Randall Collins, author of Violence: A Micro-Sociological Theory

"Brenneman draws on interviews with former gang members from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras who left gang life for evangelical Christianity."--The Chronicle Review

"This is an outstanding book that is well researched and provides a serious and dignified treatment to the religious lives of Central Americans living on the fringes of their societies."--Sociology of Religion

"An outstanding book that is well researched and provides a serious and dignified treatment
to the religious lives of Central Americans living on the fringes of their societies."--Sociology of Religion

"Shines a light on a side of evangelical Christianity in Latin America that is rarely seen in scholarly literature: gang ministry, gang exit, and gang member conversions to evangelical, and especially Pentecostal, faith...Brenneman's book ought to be the first stop for serious researchers interested in this intersection of topics."--Religious Studies Review

This is a Fantastic Book
By Christian Smith
Truth in advertising: I was Bob's dissertation advisor. But, trust me, I don't say that all my grad students' dissertations are fantastic. This one, however, is. This book is very well written, sometimes beautifully and movingly so. The analysis is incredibly smart. The topic is of massive importance and interest. The insights here into the role of emotions, bodies, gender, and much more in religion and gang violence make real contributions to our knowledge. This book is, in my view, a model of a great sociological study. If only more sociologists did work like this. I highly recommend this book as assigned reading in any undergraduate Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, or Sociology of Religion college course course.

I would like to mention I do not totally agree with some ...
By Herbert Fernandez Tamayo
As a Salvadoran I have to say this is an important book about the transnational gangs, one of the key is the author did the research at the countries that belongs to the call "northern triangle", this is an important approach. I would like to mention I do not totally agree with some facts, in some chapters the author use the word "mara", "marero" instead of "pandillero", gangster in English, and this is truly a mistake, at El Salvador's streets they are not "mareros" anymore, because "pandillero" refers to the evolution of the gangs, at early 90's we called them mareros because they were focused to protect their barrios, in some cases they were just a bunch of teenagers, now they are evolved. Furthermore, it is important to mention the gangs from El Salvador are quiet different from the gangs from Guatemala and Honduras, different does not mean less violent, from my point of view they were based on the rules from Los Angeles, when this pact is broken, the violence increased in our cities, this fact is mentioned in the book but in a general form, it would be great to get more details about it. Despite those facts, the book is a must for those of us who are involved in public policies and prevention strategies in our societies. We are in a big big mess, it is important for us to pay attention to the roots: education, job opportunities. family ties.

Conventional wisdom
By A Customer
This little book of thoughts is a compilation of the author's previous 4 little books. It is filled with many excellent items of conventional wisdom concerning the things we all deal with in daily life. For those who appreciate books of thought, I recommend this book, as well as a similar little book of gems called "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Little Book of Eastern Wisdom" by Taro Gold.

Totally unexpected
By David Hancock
Dr. Robert Anthony gives page after page of totally unexpected advice that just makes sense. You will be offended by some, inspired by others, but in either case, you'll love the collection he gives. NOTE: this is not the same material in his other books, like Beyond Positive Thinking, and The Ultimate Secrets of Total Self-Confidence so be sure to grab a copy of those while they are still available.
