An outstanding book!

The Third Advent is a very interesting book in which one gets the intuition of global affairs, world economy that are faced by our society. I read two more books by the autor, The Advent and The Legend of Dagad Trikon and I am impressed by his vast knowledge and the wonderful way he shares it with the reader. It's an outstanding book, I enjoyed reading it because I understand the author's message: It is so important to follow Sahaja Yoga practice in personl life and at corporate business level environment, as well to improve our society.

A full coverage book

This book is awesome. I have read books on network management, service fulfillment, resource provisioning, billing, etc but this is the first book that details all the fundametals in telecom management. The chapters are organized to provide a comprehensive coverage starting from the initial efforts to manage network elements to the latest converged telecom management concepts. Usual books on OSS, lack implementation details while this book has a dedicated section on implementation. I would suggest this book as a must read for anyone working on telecom management

Great book. Covers the basics well. Allot of real world examples. I'd like more coverage of Performance Management. I'd also like predictions of what OSS/BSS would look 10 years, 15 years and 20 years from now.

Excellent book on the OSS stack.

I have been searching for a book that provides a complete coverage on OSS stack. This book covers all the fundamental OSS concepts, has a well organized flow of topics and above all gives a simple and straight forward explanation of the topics covered. This book contains some of the best information about EMS, NMS and OSS/BSS compiled into a single book. In fact, it's the only book I have come across that covers all aspects of telecom management.

The book is organized into four sections. The first section (Chapters 1 to 8) deals with element management systems and covers EMS functions, TMN, ITU-T FCAPS, standardizing bodies, management protocols, etc in good depth. The second section (Chapters 9 to 18) on network management systems covers Communication networks, OSI and TCP/IP model, legacy NMS architecture, functions, major NMS products in the market, NGNM, etc. The third section (Chapters 19 to 25) on OSS/BSS details OSS operation, NGOSS, Information modeling, interface standards and several topics centered around eTOM and ITIL processes. The best part was the last section (Chapter 26 to 34) on Implementation guidelines covering OSS patterns, RPC & socket programming, secure communication, application programming, etc covered using algorithms and actual code snippets.

Overall this book has a lot of excellent information, most of which is not easy to find elsewhere."

Brzezinski's irreverent, swashbuckling account captures the greed and desperation of the time. He bribes his way aboard a Russian submarine. He survives a freak radiation spike at Chernobyl and travels 400 miles on a private plane for lunch with a gorgeous robber baroness. He's set upon by Ukrainian thugs, who leave him tied with electrical cord in a bathtub. Fortified with vodka, he crashes ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky's birthday party. And he visits a camp of "Young Pioneers", in which children play an elaborate game to learn the principles of a free market - with disastrous results that foretell the chaos in store for the Russian economy.

Been there, done that, now back again

Casino Moscow, about post-Soviet Russian and Eastern Europe, is a surprising page turner. Having worked in Russia and other former Soviet Republics, I was walking back in time as I read the book. Brzezinki's accurate portrayal of the life an expat (from the initial shock upon arrival, to the slow immersion to local custom, all the way to going native) and the business customs and irregularities (finding business partners, traveling on local transport, needless and antiquated bureaucracy, the mafia and all of the ironies in between). I laughed at loud at times and other times was reminded how scary a place to live it was. I think the comparisons to Liar's Poker are apt. The story is griping, funny, and for many people I know, all too close to reality. Billions of dollars at play in an unregulated wild west arena. He has the oil fields, oil men, bankers, Chechens, Tartars, Radisson, Nightflight, dinner parties, expat haunts, trips to the provinces,....all of it down pat and eerily reminiscent of what I know to be true. Casino Moscow culminates with an interesting and credible (hailing from the WSJ) perspective on the final spurts of Russian economic "growth."

Excellent Illustration of the "New Wild West"

I read this book cover-to-cover this past weekend and found that it captures the spirit and feelings I experienced while working and living in Russia myself in 1994-1996 as a highly paid and pampered business consultant. To this day, I still cannot accurately explain the living and working conditions as an expat in Russia/East Europe during those crazy years. I generally resort to pulling out the more than 300 hours of videotape and some 4000 pictures I took while there in order to remind myself what I went through. I do recall both cursing and thanking my circumstances on a daily basis -- cursing the long winter days, the inability to accomplish simple business tasks; thanking the opportunity I had to help transform the former "Evil Empire" into a potential commercial, financial, military and social ally of the West (Needless to say, those expats on the ground during those years had some lofty aspirations.)
I have been back to Moscow (as recently as this recent August) many times since my long-term stay and continually ask myself how the changes put into play in the early/mid-1990s resulted in the current state of the country and people.
For all of those who want to know what it was like during those wild and insane mid-1990s as an expat in Russia, this book is for you. There is no need for endless hours of videotape and pictures to see -- this book captures a big chunk of history in a neat and concise bundle.

The wild wild east

This book is an entertaining and valuable read for anyone interested in the countries and people emerging from the collapse of the Soviet empire. The book covers far more than just Moscow but ranges into the Ukraine, Belarus, Siberia and Poland. The author has a good eye for physical and personal detail and sets scenes well. He is also able to draw the reader into an understanding of the larger implications of the events he witnessed. Brzezinski also has the advantage of growing up in French Canada as the son of Polish immigrant parents. The resulting linguistic and ethnic understanding has given him a feeling of closeness to the Slavic people of whom he writes. He is able to write in a fluid style for an American audience but at the same time he reveals a sense of irony toward the wonders of the capitalistic system that many Americans, no matter how well traveled, lack.

Excellent 3rd edition, but the missing chapters are not cool....

I own the second edition of this book and greatly anticipated this third edition. I was not disappointed. I found this version to be easier to understand compared to the second edition. The chapters have been thoroughly expanded. For example, in the second version, chapter four discussed day and night lighting and global illumination. In the third, those areas are still discussed, but atmosphere and underwater lighting has been included as well as alternate methods to GI. This book is used as a textbook in many universities and these new editions come off as specific answers to specific questions; something I like very much. The chapter on character lighting has also been expanded by ten pages to include topics like spill lights and how to effectively light the iris;very welcome additions for character artists like me.

This book alone is worth five stars, but taking out chapter ten and the "Getting a Job in 3D Lighting" section (both previously available in the second edition) and having readers register with peachpit.com just to have access to content we already paid for is not cool. Now yet another company will have access to our email addresses and other personal information."Getting a Job in 3D Lighting" is valuable, but having to get it this way is a cheap marketing method I did not appreciate. This practice is not new , but other computer animation books I have purchased offer bonus content on their sites for everyone to download without requiring an account. As a big fan of this book, I hope this will not be present for any future editions.

A must have for everyone who is interested in lighting 3D scenes

I bought the 2nd edition of this, and even if it doesn't really feel that outdated when it comes to methodology this 3rd edition is improved in every regard. The fact that the 2nd edition still holds it's own today should say something about the knowledge and work the author puts into it.

It's updated with more information about popular technologies like ptex, and it reflects increased popularity and speed of global illumination in feature films.

He starts by explaining concepts of lighting, both technological and artistic. He continues going into specific methods and ways to use technology to achieve certain looks. Common errors are highlighted, good to know tricks are shown.

It manages to be generic and non-software specific where it needs to be, but still points you in the right direction when it comes to specific technology which may or may not be supported by your preferred software and other methods you may want to try to get a specific look.

The second edition has been recommended to me by VFX professionals, and it's with good reason. This is an improved version in every regard.

Very good update

The 2nd edition was already an outstanding book. I'm just an amateur in 3D but Birn's work has been immensely helpful to clarify lot of things I had heard about but never seen in detail.

The book gives a good look at the many aspects of the 3D rendering process without going too deep into technicalities : as such, it is a fitting read for beginners and intermediate users alike.

I'm re-reading the 3rd edition right now, I really liked the part related to the linear workflow (gamma correction), which to be honest had always puzzled me a bit in the past, but here it is explained with good clarity.

I definitely recommend this book, especially if you are just beginning your exploration into 3D. It will give you a first background of knowledge and put you on the right path.
