These volumes are offered with the hope that they will stimulate further thinking and publication on the integration of psychology and the Christian faith.

About the Author
Dr. John D. Carter has published a variety of articles on the integration of psychology and theology, and serves as a contributing editor to the Journal of Psychology and Theology.

S. Bruce Narramore holds an M.A. from Pepperdine University and a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky. He has also taken theological study at Fuller Theological Seminary and Talbot Theological Seminary. He was the founding Dean of the Rosemead Graduate School for Professional Psychology and Theology. He has lectured extensively on the relationship of psychology and theology, including giving the Staley Distinguished Christian Scholar Lecture Series at Covenant Theological Seminary in 1978. He is a member of the American Psychological Society.

Integration, a not so new concept!

This book is wonderfully written, and helped me to be able to understand an integration process for the scientific study of Psychology, while continuing to use the truth of God's Word. Before I read this, I was reluctant to even discuss many of the prinicples of Psychology--discounting them because I assumed that it was completely unrelated to the Bible. Carter and Narramore present the point that "All truth is God's truth". Since many of the psychological theories have been proven true about the ways in which the mind works, they can be taken into consideration like any other scientific principle. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is seeking to understand more about the ways in which these two areas of study do not need to be separated anymore.

I absolutely love the logic of this book's framework

We had several up-ending events in our family life this past year, and this financial guide from Jonathan Clements has been a godsend as we navigated the financial decisions involved. I absolutely love the logic of this book's framework. When I have a specific, urgent question, I can quickly get to the topic I need because of the way the book is organized by theme and sub-topics. In this regard, it differs from all other financial guidebooks I've read. But most important of all, to me, is that the author kept his familiar personal style (I subscribed to the WSJ for two decades mainly to be able to read Clements' weekly WSJ column). My favorite, favorite part of this book is the bit where, after explaining the logic of the advice given on a topic, Clements then includes a personal section on what he actually, in his real life, has done on the matter. Having followed this author's financial writings since the early 1990s, I can tell you that whenever I have diligently and patiently followed his lead, the results have been rewarding. And whenever I have given in to my emotional worries, and deviated from his clear logic, I've come to regret it. The other aspect of this book that is extremely helpful is the detailed teaching of complicated topics in a way that allows all of us regular people out here to truly understand the fundamentals that we have to grasp if we want to successfully manage our finances.

Easy amazing read for everybody. The sooner the better; this book has it all.

Wow, talk about an easy read. Mr. Clements really broke down the world of finances' into many different areas and keeps his explanations short and to the point. He even lets you know when a part of the book will have some boring math formulas so you can skim it if it's too much for you. Anyway the main reason for the purchase of this book was to find out about social security, its new rule and when the best time to start drawing for my wife and me. This book gave many examples and on top of that gave a website that you can go to and with little information about your age and current income will tell you how much you will draw if you choose to draw at different ages. Yes, other sites do this but none of them factored in the best time for a lower earning spouse to draw on the higher earning spouses account. the site even calculated the difference you will make by drawing at different ages. Another great point for me was his advice on how to "Rebalance" my TSP. I did this and within 5 days earned over $5,000.00. My account balance has been rising daily. This book covers almost everything and the best part is that it is done in very short sections that gets the reader attention quickly and keeps it for the entire section. He even starts out by telling you how to navigate the book. There are many referrals to different companies and websites for further information. I was able to come up with several categories I was interested in and made a list of different websites to go to for more info or to possibly purchase financial products. I would recommend this book to everyone, trust me it covers anything you can think of when it comes to finances. I'm giving one to my 17 year old granddaughter. A Practical Financial Guru has Reappeared

I followed Jonathan Clements for many years through his Wall St. Journal (WSJ) column. In my opinion he had the clear straightforward answers to everyday financial questions that everyone encounters. I lost a compass for my financial life when he left the WSJ and I was so happy to see that he has reappeared with his Money Guide series. Now I have a single reference guide to pull off of my shelf when I have a question about a financial issue. This is far more effective than trying to locate the appropriate yellowing WSJ clipping that I have kept on file over the years.

How much do I treasure Mr. Clements' advice? Well, my son graduated from college last spring and he now has enough money to make his first stock investment. He conferred with me over the past few days about how to go about making the best decision. Once we had talked through what he should do and he had made a decision he placed a trading order. He then asked me whether I could recommend a book that he could consult to get further advice. I pulled my copy of "Money Guide 2016" from my desk, held it up to my video conference camera, and told him that I would order a copy for him as soon as we finished our video conference. I did.

As you might have guessed, my investing advice was heavily influenced by years of following the insights and recommendations of Jonathan Clements. I recommend that you avail yourself of his knowledge as well.

The Athanassakis translation of the "Homeric Hymns" -- a somewhat disparate collection of narratives, possible opening invocations for performances of longer poems, and a mix of what seem to be actual religious documents and literary exercises -- displays both literary grace (in the verse-line translations), and scholarly explication (in the introduction, and in the accompanying notes to the individual hymns).

[In his 2004 revised edition -- my review is of the original 1976 publication -- the translator continues to insist he was not aiming at producing poetry. It is indeed not formal English verse, but after decades of use I still find his translation not only readable but exceptionally attractive, and at least poetic, and not just by comparison to the old Evelyn-White translation.]

The poems are described as Homer's in the manuscript tradition, in which they are offered together with hymns by historical poets, but also some attributed to the mythical Orpheus. They are in the dactylic hexameter line of the Homeric epics, which in some of them is employed as a lyric meter -- a somewhat astonishing idea to those who know the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey." Athanassakis does a wonderful job of producing consistently attractive English versions, while attempting to adhere closely to the original. (I have no claims to real scholarship in this, but I once took the trouble to work through passages against the corresponding lines in a Greek text, with the help of the Liddel-&-Scott "Lexicon" and several grammars.)

After a long period of neglect on the part of translators into English, this group of poems has been translated in both verse and prose a number of times in recent decades. This volume first appeared at about the same time as translations by the poet Charles Boer (extremely "modern") and by Thelma Sargent in the Norton Library (to mention those still in print). These lacked the helpful apparatus (although Sargent could probably have provided something similar). The later Shelmerdine translation, in the Focus Classical Library series, is very extensively annotated, but is in part aimed at readers completely unfamiliar with Greek myth and literature in part at those more interested in narrative than ancient verse-forms. (In other words, a good textbook in a world in which the "classics" have dropped out of pre-collegiate courses.) Among the crop of *very* recent translations, by Cashford (Penguin Classics, with notes by Richardson), by Crudden (Oxford World's Classics), and (in a Loeb Classical Library bilingual edition) by M.L. West) [and now (2004) Diane Rayor], the work of Athanassakis seems to me to retain its place as both attractive and useful. Although Crudden, in particular, shows the benefit of another quarter-century of scholarship, his annotations often address other issues, and his notes on some of the hymns range from slim to nothing at all.

How important are the notes? To a casual reader, they are of interest only if they help to make sense of a passage at hand. Some readers, however, will be using the book as a primary source for Greek myth and religion. Guesses and compromises obvious to a classicist, or even an amateur like me, may look like solid facts to the uninformed.

An example of the care Athanassakis takes with such issues is his explanation of a much-debated passage in the "Hymn to Demeter." It is usually understood to explain winter as the portion of the year Persephone must remain in the Underworld. (If you don't know the story, sorry -- look it up, you may enjoy it). Unfortunately, explicit statements of this interpretation in Greek texts are late. Some scholars, such as the very distinguished authority on Greek religion, M.P. Nilsson, have argued for the barren Mediterranean summer instead. The "Hymn" should settle the matter, and Athanassakis, like most translators, offers a version in which it *is* winter -- but explicitly notes (as Cashford/Richardson, for example, do not) that the whole section is in such poor condition in the only extant manuscript that this is merely a plausible reconstruction. Important to know, if you want to build on argument on what looks like a solid fact!

The Best of the Best

It's really hard to find a good translation of classical works. We mustn't forget that most of these literary works had been translated in the mid to late 1800's and the use of language is not always the best.

I enjoy reading and referring to this book for two reasons:

-it was translated by Mr. Athanassakis, a Greek-American professor, who understands the text in its original format and can produce a sound translation into English without losing the meaning and without employing personal "stylisic contortions" of the text;

-the book contains notes relating to each passage, which helps students of classical works identify the Greek religion, mythology and cultural history; it makes references to specific titles like the Theogony, Odyssey, Iliad, Orphic Hymns, Herodotos, Euripides; also translates Roman-Latin words found in corresponding texts of the same passage.

If you are looking for an "unadulterated" text of the Homeric Hymns, this is book you need for your library! I'm surprised it's not being used in schools...

Very Satisfied =)

I bought this just out of casual interest in the subject, and I am very happy with it =). It was very interesting for me, even though I have a limited knowledge on the subject (I'm not claiming to be an expert at all). I can't say anything for those wishing to study it seriously because, like I said, I'm no expert. However, I do recommend it at least to all other casual or slightly interested readers as it's not boring at all (or at least it wasn't for me =)P ). Overall a very good purchase!

Great Slav repertoire book

This is a very good book on the popular Slav defence. Plenty of detail, yet still very user friendly; even if you've never played the Slav before the excellent 30 page intro will get you up to speed very quickly.

Vigus has picked a repertoire that offers some good counterattacking possibilities, while still being practical and easy to learn rapidly. Obviously, the focus is on meeting standard 1.d4 openings, but he does give some brief tips on facing other sidelines. The Slav, like the Dutch or QGD can be used against any non-1.e4 opening.

Some examples:
In the mainline 6.Ne5 he suggests 7...Nb6 which is not well covered elsewhere.
4.e3 he picks Bg4.
3.Nc3 he goes for dxc4.
And he also has an interesting idea about how to face the exchange. While Vigus explains his choices well, he usually provides an alternative line (briefly) so you are not forced to follow his preferred repertoire.

If the above moves don't make any sense, don't worry it's all made very clear in the 11 chapters + intro. The book is 224 pages long with a useful index of variations at the back.

I had been interested in the Slav for a long time, but didn't know where to begin in creating a solid but easy repertoire. Well, James Vigus has done all the hard work for me!

The Slav is more solid than the Dutch IZ and more counterattacking than the QGD. Also, white can't avoid it like they can the Nimzo, Benoni & Benko. I find that the Slav tends to dovetail well with players of the Caro-Kann, Scandinavian or French.

A Good, Solid Opening Book

I recently decided to make the switch from the Nimzo/QID as Black vs. d4 to the Slav. I didn't really know where to start, and as an e4 player, I didn't have a lot of familiarity with the Slav - from either the Black or the White side.

This book was a godsend. Vigus has done all the "heavy lifting" here and has produced an opening book that makes it easy to familiarize yourself with the salient points of the Slav, and to create your own repertoire (or just borrow Vigus'...).

Get this book and Cox' "Dealing with d4 Deviations" book and you will be ready as black for ANYTHING 1.d4 can throw at you.

Definitely recommended.

Best Book on the Slav

James Vigus's book "Play the Slav" is an important upgrade in existing literature on the Slav defence. Until now the best introductions to the Slav were
"The Slav vs 1 d4" by Silman and Donaldson, "Winning With the Slav" by Markov and Schipkov, and "The Slav" by Sadler. These are still useful albeit dated, and the later two are somewhat more comprehensive than Vigus's repetoire book (Silman and Donaldson is also a repetoire book), but Vigus has left them all far behind. If you buy one book on the Slav, this is it. Supplemented by Burgess's "The Slav", the classic and very comprehensive theory book by Graham Burgess, this is all one needs today.

Vigus's 34 page "Introduction" is alone worth the price. This is the best introduction and study of the Slav ever written in English. Through the study of about one dozen carefully selected games he covers the main strategic themes of the Slav: (1) Black's light square bishop, (2) the restraint pawn structure (c6/e6 vs d4/e3), (3) Black's doubled f-pawns, (4) Black's c6-c5 break, (5) Black's e6-e5 break, (6) the open centre, (7) Black's isolated e-pawn, (8) White's d5 break, (9) e5 vs e6 with open d and c files (which Vigus calls "Argentinean structures), (10) in the spirit of Chigorin(Black's Bg4 and Bb4 ideas to exchange bishop for knight), and, lastly, (11) Symmetry. A day or two with this very well presented material, and you can begin to play the Slav and generate ideas straightaway.

Vigus's repetoire choices won't please everyone. For example, he disdains the highly topical and very sharp 6 Ne5 Nbd7 7 Nxc4 Qc7 !? for what he names "The Sokolov Defence" with 7...Nb6. He provides a more or less convincing arguement by means of thorough analysis, and a smattering of TN. The explanations are clear, and the analysis by and large quite good. One cannot always agree with his evaluations, but Vigus gives us plenty to work with. Also, his unorthodox treatment of the Exchange Variation, with 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6 3 cxd5 cxd5 4 Nf3 Nf6 5 Nc3 Nc6 6 Bf4 answered by the rare 6...Nh5, which Vigus names "The Russian Counterattack" will not be to everyone's taste, but it serves to liven up what can be the one boring reason not to play the Slav. Vigus treatment of the classic Dutch variation and the Tolush-Geller gambit (5 e4) are more traditional, but thorough and instructive.

Vigus's writing is solid and enjoyable. His explanations lucid. The index and bibliography are a plus. He uses a number of complete (and near complete) games in the text, without adopting the often tiresome illustrative games approach of many opening books. Even though this is a repetoire book, it gives a broad and good overview by which one may learn the Slav.

The binding is weak, typical of Everyman publishing, and after a year of use some of my pages and leafs are falling out.

Recommended for players rated between about 1500 and 2200. Lower rated players will gain more from the introduction than from the rest of the book. There are some interesting ideas here for masters, as well, although they are scattered about in the analysis.

Dr Robert A. Forczyk has a PhD in International Relations and National Security from the University of Maryland and a strong background in European and Asian military history. He is currently a lieutenant colonel in the US Army Reserves and has served 18 years as an armour officer in the US 2nd and 4th Infantry Divisions and as an intelligence officer in the 29th Infantry Division (Light). The author lives in Laurel, MD.

Excellent Coverage of a Long Convoluted Campaign

My initial impression after reading about the fortress complex around Sevastopol (which could have been described more fully) was that it was nearly impregnable. When it was further discovered Manstein had approximately ten Axis divisions to capture the port city as well as the entire Crimea, I was skeptical. Manstein had to break into the Crimea through Perekop and Ishun, chase the the retreating 51st Army while capturing Simferopol then send the 42nd Korp toward Kerch while the rest of his forces head for Sevastopol. After starting the assault, Manstein had to stop and handle the invasion forces landing at Feodosiya and Kerch then head back to Sevastopol and complete the capture.

The author does a good job, spending 8 pages, on explaining the origins and the chronology of the campaign. It really helped in understanding the coming battle. The Opposing Plans was concise but wished it could have been embellished. The Opposing Leaders was good as well; it included coverage of the Rumanian Avramescu. The expose on Manstein hit the mark. Manstein was a good tactician but he also had his dark side. The Opposing Forces was comprehensive and included an Order of Battle. The section on artillery with the German special weapons was enjoyed. I was surprised to see a table of rounds fired by the big guns included but after studying the table, I realized Dora and Karl had not participated in the assault as much as I thought.

The author devotes 55 pages to the battle action and its as good as you can get with that page limitation. It was very informative. The ground, naval and air campaigns are covered.
There are five 2-D maps and three 3-D maps. All are very good. The first map includes all of the Crimea while the rest cover the specific battle. The 3-D maps are two pages wide and are only marginally hampered by the crease. As usual for Osprey books, many good photos are included. The photo of Dora alone was worth the price of the book. The book also had three 2-page color illustrations which were good.

The Aftermath covers the cost of the campaign as well as describing the Soviet recapture of the Crimea in 1944. Capturing the Crimea was important to Hitler for it guarded his southern flank when moving into the Caucasus. The author covers all key points and would be an excellent read for both new and experienced student.
This book covers an impressive German victory which promoted Manstein to Field Marshall. It should be in every war buff's collection and I highly recommend it.

Excellent Campaign Overview

Following the standard Osprey format for short books on specific campaigns, this book does a great job on the subject. The book covers the initial assault into the Perekop isthmus, the Soviet attacks across the Kerch straights to attempt to relieve the city and the Axis counter-attacks, through to the defense of the city. In addition to providing details on the ground combat, the air and sea contributions are also covered. The are several maps with good detail on unit dispositions, there is a detailed order of battle for May 1942 (the period of the final assault on the city), and a section covering the major commanders on both sides.

I've been interested in this particular campaign for a while and found the author provides sufficient background and details. I enjoyed the maps, as well as new information (to me) on the Soviet defense of the city. A truly epic campaign, Forczyk has done a fine job at advancing the historiography.
