About the Author

Geoffrey Hill, the son of a police constable, was born in Worcestershire in 1932. He was educated at Bromsgrove County High School and at Keble College, Oxford. After teaching for more than thirty years in England, first at Leeds and subsequently at Cambridge, he became Professor of Literature and Religion at Boston University in Massachusetts, where he was also founding co-director of the Editorial Institute. In 2010 he was elected Professor of Poetry at the University of Oxford.

Hill's Work Gathered

If you love Geoffrey Hill's poetry, this mammoth volume will occupy you for a long time. Containing all of Hill's books, Broken Hierarchies also gives us additional materials such as his daybooks. A complex poet, Hill examines his English heritage mediated by the horrors of 20th century war. It is a good idea to have a reference book, or at least Wikipedia at hand, since some of his references may not be familiar to many people, myself included. But Hill's poetry immense humanity speaks to the inherent generosity of spirit battered so by human existence. A masterpiece by a true master.

I do not believe that anyone who has not studied the European classics in full depth will ever fully understand the references in this obscure dense collection of poetry, That said, there is reward throughout in showing what is possible with language when there is no filter for an insistently individual and often deadly ironic voice.

Those, blessed I should say, who think Hill not just a great poet but merely the greatest poet of the last sixty years composing in English will finally be able to set aside/sell in the market square/consume in thankful fire their much thumbed, pass yellowed copy of his last volume of collected poems, issued in the gray days of John Major, when the ground still lay covered with the cinders of Maggie Tatcher's august reign. Sunt lacrimae rerum indeed.

Excellent read, for music and non music fans

I was never a huge Twisted Sister fan, but grew up in the 80's and loved the whole metal scene. I bought this book hoping to get an insight to the whole era, and how the music industry worked back then. Dee delivers on that story, but also delves into many other facets of his personal life, family, relationships, band history, and gives a great glimpse into how driven he was in his quest for superstardom, and what boundaries he overstepped to get what he wanted. Not just about the salad days, either. The rise to fame, life at the top, and the downfall of a multi-platinum band is all revealed, warts and all. He's also not afraid to reveal his inner fears and weaknesses, and his candor is something that a lot of other autobiographical authors should take note of. If only every book was this honest. Very well written. You'll either come away hating him, or admire him for his honesty. I'm sure Dee wouldn't have it any other way. Get this book!!!

You Can't Stop Rock n Roll

I always thought Twister Sister was a rock solid band back in the day, and I enjoyed their goofy humored music videos. But when Dee Snider went to bat for free speech at the PMRC hearings on the 80s, he along with Frank Zappa and John Denver became even more respectable and interesting in my mind. After seeing Dee on various TV shows since, he never fails to be interesting, proving that you can succeed in life while maintaining a clean lifestyle and using nothing but brains and hard work to get to where you want. I have nothing but respect for him, and I can guarantee if you don't think he's a sharp guy then you will be converted after reading his extremely detailed and entertaining book. Dee is brutally honest, a great writer, and never fails to find the humor in even the toughest parts of his life. This is an essential read for anyone into early metal music, music in general, or if you want to see what it takes to be successful in life. One of the best rock and roll autobiographies I've ever read.

Well written and a fun read!

I must admit I've never been a Twisted Sister fan but after hearing Dee on the radio talking about the book it sounded interesting. He is a good writer with the ability to connect to the reader. You find the stories easy to relate to and his self deprecating humor makes the reader empathize with him as a person. You really start to like Dee, whether you know anything about him or not.
The most interesting part is the rise and fall of his band and how the record business works from that perspective.
This is not the typical rock star book with a collection of "road stories" and self-aggrandizement. It's a true, honest biography and history of Dee's life, loves, triumphs, and tragedies. There are plenty of lessons to be learned and his insight into life is worth the price of the book. A really good read!

About the Author
Peter Jennings (1938–2005) was chief anchor of ABC’s World News Tonight. In more than 40 years as a broadcast journalist, he worked in most parts of the world, from the American South to Southern Africa, from the Middle East to eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Among hundreds of programs he was a part of, he treasured those he did with and for the young.

Todd Brewster was the senior editorial producer of ABC’s The Century television series. In more than 25 years as a journalist, he has covered the American national political scene and the collapse of Communism in eastern Europe, both for Life, where he was a writer and editor. He is currently the new director of the Center for Oral History at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Necessary, not perfect

The iText library is a bit too preoccupied with pass editing. There's too much event oriented code. In contrast, Adobe Illustrator has no issues opening up a complex PDF and offering full editing tools in place. In my opinion, the iText API design is more than a little off. The code is heavy. Namespace conflicts occur left and right. (YARC- Yeah, another rectangle class)

The javadocs are non-existent. Even the parameters aren't documented well. Example:
"public void addTemplate(PdfTemplate template, float a, float b, float c, float d, float e, float f)
Adds a template to this content. "

This book won't solve many of the javadoc shortcomings. It's a little too much cookbook on the simple obvious items, and not enough detail on the esoteric.

STILL, iText is likely the finest Java PDF API out there. Definitely a love hate relationship, but if you're going to use it, you'll need this book.

I read (parts) of the book and now I have an application

When it comes to producing a PDF from on-line data (generally a database) I found only two open source alternatives: Jasper Reports and iText. I chose iText and I'm glad I did. I needed a light weight (easy to install) PDF report generator. I am running some fairly complex SQL queries to generate the data and I need to deploy this code on a number of systems. I don't want it to fail because something in the infrastructure is missing. iText gave me all of this (well, I had to do the complex SQL myself, of course).

iText in Action allowed me to develop this application on a very aggressive schedule (aren't all schedules aggressive?) The book clearly lays out how to use itext, fonts, tables and almost everything else I needed. On occasion I had to search on line to figure out how to do something, but most of the time I could find what I needed in the book.

In summary, I recommend iText if you need something light weight. Jasper Reports would be a good way to build an enterprise report generator. But it's problematic if you want to deploy it on lots of systems. If you choose to use iText, then this book will be worth every penny you pay for it.

As of 2014 I have not seen a good alternative to iText. The iText API is the best that I've seen for creating PDFs (if you just want to read PDFs there are other alternatives). iText appears to be used is a vast array of software products that create PDFs(although in some cases the version of iText is the earlier non-GPL encumbered open source version).

iText is released under a combined GPL/Commerical license. As I understand the iText software license, if you use the GPL license you must open source the code that makes use of iText. If you're going to use iText for an open source project then it is reasonable to purchase this book.

If you are not open sourcing your code you need to purchase a license, which starts at $1325 (in 2014). As a software engineer I think that software engineers should be paid for their work, so I have no complaint about iText as a commercial product. However, since this license is a significant amount of money, I think that it would be reasonable to expect that this book, in either paper or electronic form, to come with the commercial license (although I suppose that it could be observed that many software engineers have to buy books on other commercial software products in order to succeed in their use).

The septuagenarian surgeon whose brutally honest demythologization of death in How We Die garnered a National Book Award offers a mushier, platitude-filled treatise on aging, calling it a "gift" that establishes boundaries in our lives, making everything within those boundaries all the more precious. Brief, frank descriptions of droopy penises, declining hormone levels and loss of hearing and bone density are accompanied by reminders that stroke is not a normal consequence of aging and that our bodies are like cars and taking good care of parts extends their usefulness. A gushing tribute to pioneering cardiac surgeon Michael DeBakey, now aged 98, teaches the importance of knowing one's limitations and learning to function within them, while now-80-year-old actress Patricia Neal recalls how sheer stubbornness and a browbeating husband enabled her recovery from a debilitating stroke at 39. Nuland learned life lessons from two fans, a cancer survivor who understands that it's her response to adversity, and not the adversity itself, that shapes her future, and a formerly depressed octogenarian who now doesn't allow herself the "luxury" of despair. Although some of Nuland's devotees will be comforted by his hopeful if familiar advice, others seeking more of the bracing, defiant insights that made him famous will be disappointed. (Mar. 6)

In the penultimate chapter, on wisdom, Nuland says he hopes to "avoid the great temptation of waxing ponderous." Too late. All too many of the preceding chapters are eye-rollingly boring in spots or, when they consist largely of medical and physiological data, almost throughout. At least there are no graphs; better yet, despite the subtitle, this is not a self-help tome. But Nuland is far too good a writer to give us a thoroughly dull book, and as we know from his previous best-sellers and prize winners, beginning with How We Die (1994), when he writes about his own experiences and particular people, his is as good as narrative nonfiction gets. Two chapters are outstanding; each of them is primarily a profile of an extraordinary person. One focuses on the greatest living cardiologist, Michael DeBakey, who remains professionally and otherwise active at 98. The other profiles the brilliant English eccentric Aubrey de Grey, who has made himself a one-man explanatory and promotional army for the notion that human life is vastly extendable and that maximum longevity is every person's most important right. A couple of other chapters containing portraits of vigorous survivors of severe disease incidents (stroke, heart attack, etc.) are pretty absorbing, and all the advice on aging is sound and unfaddish, despite being tedious. A few parts of this book were useful and thought-provoking

A few parts of this book were useful and thought-provoking. Too much of it gave endless personal detail about various theories about aging and the people who formulated those theories. Example: Pages and pages profiling a man who believes that we have the right -- and the potential capability -- to live 500-1,000 years. Truly absurd.

A Wise and Provocative Book

This book made me smarter about what to expect in the coming decades (I'm 67) and wiser about how I might deal with what comes. It is both provoctive...in that I am, weeks later, still thinking about issues the book raised...and supportive. For me, understanding reduces anxiety. Nuland writes accessibly and, by the end of the book, I felt it would be pleasure to have him for a friend as well as a doctor. The friend who recommended the book said,"Oh, you will know most of what is in it." But even though I am married to a physician and have read widely on aging, I did know most of what was in it...and am glad I now do. I recommend this book highly to anyone on the deep end of middle age.

Powerful and extremely valuable

"The Art of Aging" is the fourth of Dr. Nuland's books that I have read, and for me it is the most powerful and personally valuable. It is one of those books that I sincerely wish had been available to me in my own "middle age", when I would have had the opportunity to apply many more of his wonderful insights not only to myself, but perhaps to my relationship with my own elderly parents, both of whom are now deceased. As it is, I have every intention of sharing this exceptional work with my own daughters, in the hope that they will find it as valuable as I do, at a time when it may give them some meaningful insights at opportune times.
